We had the good fortune of connecting with John Lawrence and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi John, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
The goal of the John E. Lawrence Summer Jazz Series is to bring to the community the best in smooth jazz concerts every Friday all summer long. That means the best recording artist, the best stage and the best sound company. The risk taking comes in to play when I book everyone involved with no regards as to cost or budget. The goal is to make the jazz series the best that it can be.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In 2019 John dedicated himself to writing and recording music fifteen to twenty hours a day and to date, he has written, recorded and produced over six hundred songs. That type of dedication has led to a collaboration with Grammy Award winning keyboardist / composer and producer Jeff Lorber. Who has written, produced and performed on a song entitled “Leather Jacket” that will be released July 5, 2022. and “Velocity” released March 14, 2023. The team of Lorber and Lawrence has produced their third single entitled “Wake Up The Groove Again” slated to be released November 2023.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My friend and mentor Dr. Morris J. Lawrence Jr. Grammy award winning keyboardist, composer and producer Jeff Lorber. My parents Hugh and Marjorie for believing in me. The Ypsilanti Township and Washtenaw County Government for their support as well as all of the many sponsors that have donated to the John E. Lawrence Summer Jazz Series. Last but not least, The team of volunteers that give of their time and talent all summer long.
