Meet Erika Plunkett | Social Impact Strategist & Advocate | Executive Director, Ama International

We had the good fortune of connecting with Erika Plunkett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erika, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
The nonprofit realm is beautifully complicated and sometimes, it feels entirely backward. Many picture it as a place where good vibes rule and everyone gets along, but the truth is, it’s not always that simple. Yes, we’re driven by our desire to connect and spark real change in the world. But there’s a flip side that can feel pretty jarring — the part where we are expected to chase funding. It’s a space where heartfelt stories take a backseat to numbers and checkboxes, losing a bit of their soul in the process.
Consider this: what if major funders and grantors acted more like investors? Not just by providing funds, but by truly investing themselves, understanding our dreams and the challenges we face, becoming partners in our mission before they write a check.
Regarding competition, it’s every bit as intense as what you’d find in the corporate sector. It certainly drives us to excel, but can also put up walls when we’d rather build bridges.
In those challenging moments, we pause and reflect on our “why”—the reason we dove into this in the first place. Our journey often feels like a dance between heart and hustle. But in the end, it’s the smiles, the stories, and the hope we see in the communities we serve that light our way forward and remind us of our purpose.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Today, I beam with gratitude when I look at the team that stands beside me. Our collective strength lies in our diversity—across cultures, generations, and even borders. The beauty of our group, which spans two countries, is that every individual volunteers their time, skills, and heart towards our shared mission. This isn’t just a testament to their dedication but also to the compelling nature of the cause we champion.
I believe collaboration is the cornerstone of impactful change. This belief was cemented in 2017 when a humble project, initiated by a small group, snowballed into transformative outcomes beyond my wildest dreams. What Ama has achieved since then—educating young girls, providing essential healthcare, and fortifying families—represents not just the realization of our collective dreams but also the power of unity and purpose. It’s a clear testament that while individual sparks can start a fire, collaborative effort keeps it burning bright. And while I might be at the forefront, it’s essential to acknowledge that every milestone we’ve reached has been a team effort.
As for something that “sets me apart” in my professional journey it’s undeniably my steadfast self-belief. Rather than questioning my place, especially as a woman, I’ve consistently felt that I belong, that I make unique contributions, and that my presence has intrinsic value. This isn’t a declaration of arrogance, but rather a deep-rooted understanding of my own worth.
But here’s the real magic: while I recognize my own worth, I equally see the inherent value in others. To me, every individual, with their unique experiences and perspectives, brings something invaluable. This belief doesn’t just shape my professional interactions; it defines them. Recognizing the worth in myself and others has cultivated an environment of mutual respect and collaboration in all my endeavors. And in a world that sometimes leans into self-doubt and mistrust, my conviction in our collective potential feels both radical and necessary.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When my bestie comes to town, it’s an absolute whirlwind of the best kind! We kick things off right at home, lounging on the couch, coffee in hand — just talking about everything and nothing. But it’s not all chill; we love getting a little fancy sometimes, so a night out at Butchers Union is a must — their food is to die for. A day by Lake Michigan is non-negotiable. Whether we’re kayaking or hiking, it’s just the perfect escape. And oh, the treats! Depending on the season, we’re grabbing doughnuts and cider from Robinettes, ice cream from Frosty Boy, or those sweet, sweet crepes from Brown Butter Creperie. A shopping spree at Breton Village is in there somewhere, with a mandatory coffee stop at Cafe de Miro — seriously, their Turkish coffee is the bomb. Throughout the week, we’re just soaking it all in, maybe dressing up for a ritzy dinner at MRDR or checking out any local events that pop up. And as our week wraps up, we’re back where we started — deep in conversation, reminiscing and just feeling grateful for our friendship.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
When I think of who deserves a shoutout in my journey, my parents come to mind immediately. They’ve worn many hats – from entrepreneurs to humanitarians, and have selflessly served as pastors for almost three decades. Their commitment to creating programs that offer help, hope, and healing has always resonated with me. Their example in leadership and their tireless drive have been foundational in all my endeavors. Quite simply, they’ve been the backbone of everything I’ve pursued, and I owe so much of my direction and passion to their influence.
