We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Berning and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, what do you want people to remember about you?
I used to be terrified of death and dying. I would wake up in the middle of the night, drenched in sweat and in a panic at the thought of dying.

Reflecting back on this time in my life, I don’t believe I had found purpose, passion or meaning. I realized I wasn’t necessarily afraid of dying but of dying without having done something impactful; without having left something lasting on the earth for long after I was gone.

This was before my husband and I started Let Them Live. Late on a cold December night in 2018, my husband Nathan had been made aware of a pregnant woman living in her car, freezing. She was evicted, lost her job and felt totally hopeless. She had an abortion scheduled not because she wanted one but because she felt like she had no other option. So we gave her all the money we had (we didn’t have much because we were just married) and helped get her back into her apartment. She cancelled her abortion and sent us an ultrasound of her 7-week old baby. That baby is now 4 and a half years old. That baby will grow up to have their own children someday and then grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ever since then, I do not fear death or dying because I know that when I leave this earth, generations will continue to exist long after I am gone. I want people to remember the ripple effect of saving lives. That when one life is saved, it actually saves generations. Our legacy will live on generation after generation because we invested in the lives of innocent human beings.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The journey of starting a nonprofit is not easy. To say it is difficult would be an understatement. But nothing worthwhile is ever easy.

I am where I am today first and foremost because of God. His perfect plan for my life has been unfolding and I would be so lost without Him.

But, as in any relationship, I also had to do my part. I had to say “Yes” to His plan in my life. I have had to work 90 hour weeks to ensure that Let Them Live would grow to serve more and more women and their babies. I have had to sacrifice time with family and friends and my own comfort in order to ensure that I created something that would long outlast me.

Looking back on the last 5 years, I am proud of my accomplishments. Not only have we helped over 800 pregnant women choose life but we have been able to employ and staff over 60 people and give tens of thousands of donors the opportunity to help.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to every woman experiencing an unexpected pregnancy and her unborn child.
