We had the good fortune of connecting with Ellen Harz-Cizek and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ellen, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
Being able to create every day is a dream come true for most artists. But, it’s challenging to establish yourself and find clients regularly —all while not letting income stress you to the point of losing your passion for doing what you love.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I specialize in portraits, couples, weddings, and events. I admire the honesty that photography portrays. I’ve always been interested in capturing people — how we move and experience moments within our surroundings and with others. Therefore, I’m always anticipating those ‘in-between’ candid moments.

I’ve also worked full-time as a Marketing Specialist for the past 7 years. Within this role, I handle all photo + video content for the company, including specialized projects and events. I maintain my freelance work during the evenings and weekends. The flexibility and pace between these two careers is a great balance for me.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Honestly, it depends on what time of the year it is. Here in West Michigan, we have the enjoyment of experiencing all four seasons! I’m a big fan of doing anything outside under the sun – that may be taking an afternoon trip out to the beach near Holland or Saugatuck or a nearby hike at Proven Trails. That would be followed by first stopping at a local coffee shop such as Lucy’s to grab a bite to eat and refreshments. We’d end the day at a cozy restaurant like Linear or Butcher’s Union.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom, a Creative Director/Graphic Designer, introduced me to photography. Working closely with many photographers throughout her career, she would often bring me to the photoshoots, and sometimes I’d even be a model on the set. I fell in love with the whole production and the crew, who were always fun to work with. I earned my BFA from Kendall College of Art & Design and have been a Freelance Photographer ever since
