We had the good fortune of connecting with SATORI CIRCUS and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi SATORI, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I honestly don’t think about risks in the traditional sense. I think of them more as challenges. And I don’t back away too much from good challenge, which really has been about my entire life as an artist for 43 years. If I had never given myself the challenge of creating the character SATORI CIRCUS, I wouldn’t be here writing and I wouldn’t have made my 35th year as that character. Has the road been bumpy? Hell yeah. It still is at times, and I dig it! It keeps me pumped and going in many directions. Which is pretty cool!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Haha…what I want the world to know about me? Good question. I want the world to know that after 35 years of being SATORI CIRCUS, that I’m still going strong at 63 years old. And I don’t plan on stopping. 1988 was the year I started SATORI CIRCUS. Did I have ups and downs, absolutely. Was it easy? Yes and no. Meaning, I knew what I wanted and where I wanted to take my art form which I came to know as performance art…or at least I accepted that label. From galleries, to store fronts, the street, garages, to small black box theaters…I carved out my path. And the tough part…was me wondering if what I was doing was good enough. I think a lot of us as artist go through self-doubt, and yeah, I faced that myself. But even if I was wondering “what the hell am I doing?”, I still moved forward in a zig zag. I just couldn’t see myself giving in, throwing in the towel so to speak. It was much like a roller coaster, as in/is life. Secretly I enjoyed the ups and downs and the uncertainty. It made me stronger, resilient, and creative on a shoe string budget. 35 years and still climbing, I’ve become sort of a statesman in the Detroit underground along with other great folks. More is coming. I ain’t done yet!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom, has and always will be a huge inspiration. She was a rebel herself as a kid growing up poor in Detroit and she always told us kids to be you and don’t let anyone tell you different. If people tell you you can’t do something….that’s the best kick in the pants to prove them wrong. She was my biggest fan, even though I drove her a little nuts being ADHD kid. But she got it.
