We had the good fortune of connecting with Doreen Hunter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Doreen, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

Despite facing multiple rejections from job interviews in my desired field of interior design, I refused to give up. Rather than waiting for opportunities to come my way, I took charge and created them for myself. Today, after three decades of hard work, I am proud to be a successful business owner, having started as a sole proprietor and then incorporated. Our secret to long-term success lies in our unwavering commitment to networking, participating in trade shows and conferences, and volunteering within the industry. My recent appointment as the chapter president of the Michigan American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), the largest professional organization for interior designers, is a testament to our commitment to excellence.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As a business, we understand and acknowledge the existence of companies that carry out similar work as ours. However, we always keep our focus on our work and goals. This helps us to stay aligned with our objectives, provide exceptional client service, and generate repeat business.

We are committed to improving our work with each new project we undertake. Even though there may be similarities in shapes, patterns, and colors, no two things are identical, and there are always lessons to learn. We uphold our brand value of not repeating or using the same material in other projects, no matter how good it may be. We focus on creating unique, outstanding work that aligns with our client’s requirements and objectives.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Join me for an unforgettable weekend experience in Detroit! On Friday evening, we will indulge in the mouth-watering cuisine of Ottavia’s, followed by a trip to The Goffery on the fourth floor, where you can enjoy cocktails with a spectacular view of the city skyline at night. On Saturday afternoon, we will make our way downtown to feast on the best pizza in town at Mootz. Later, we will return home to savor some of the finest wine from Pure Vin. For shopping enthusiasts, I have handpicked three of my favorite boutiques in Detroit – Flo’s in Midtown, Savvy in Eastern Market, and Voila in Grosse Pointe. Finally, on Sunday, we will explore the rich cultural heritage of Detroit by visiting the museums, gift shops, and more in the cultural area.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Of all the things I’m proud of, my success is at the top of the list. But I know I didn’t do it alone. Along the way, I’ve had the privilege of meeting countless individuals who have been there to encourage and uplift me when the path ahead looked bleak. Although I won’t mention any names, it’s safe to say that my support system has been nothing short of exceptional. Without them, I wouldn’t have been able to persevere through the challenges I’ve faced. The road to success has been anything but easy, but with my inner circle of supporters by my side, I’ve kept moving forward, even when the odds seemed stacked against me.
