Meet Lisa Hurt | Candle Artisan

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Hurt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I knew that I wanted to start a business and name it after my deceased mother. At the time, I did not know what type of business I wanted to pursue. I had so many ideas like selling hair bundles, teaching online classes, starting a food business, and an online clothing boutique. When I researched candle making, I immediately knew that would be the ideal business for me.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The name of my business is Rachel Virginia Collection and I create calm, soothing experiences that are required in life. The products are candles, body care, and home scents. What sets me apart is creative with my products. I’m most proud to have repeat customers that support my business. How I got to where I am today business wise is being consistent and research the everchanging candle industry. No it has not been easy and how I overcame that was to always show up. No matter what, just show up. The lessons that I have learned along the way is to know your target audience, their preferences, and market trends. Understanding my customers helps me create products that meet their needs and preferences. Stay updated on market trends to adapt and innovate. What I want the world to know about my brand is that Rachel Virginia Collection was born out of the belief that everyone deserves to experience calm and soothing moments, and what better way to achieve this than through the power of artisan crafted candles.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would explore Detroit, Michigan. In the morning: Start the day with breakfast at Lou’s Ham & Corned Beef, known for its delicious food options. Late Morning: Explore the Detroit Institute of Arts for a dose of culture and art. Lunch: Grab lunch at Lafayette Coney or American Coney for an authentic Detroit coney dog experience.
Afternoon: Visit the Charles H Wright African American Museum of African American History.
Evening: Have dinner at Wright & Company, an upscale dining spot in downtown Detroit.
Night: Experience the nightlife in the historic Greektown district.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The amazing Facebook group that I’m apart of is DIY Candle Making Beginner to Advanced. It’s a private group that gives advice to all candle makers, no matter what skill level they’re. The group is very supportive and gives the best advice. Also, the Handcrafted Soap & Cosmetic Guild which supports and educate the handcrafted soap, cosmetic, and candle industries.
