Meet Rob Devroy | Creative Director + Founder of Capture Video + Marketing

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rob Devroy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rob, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Right out of college I did freelance video editing and animation. I enjoyed the freelance aspect of it – the ability to work on my schedule and be my own boss. But I wasn’t very good when I started!
After spending a few years working at an agency and in a corporate marketing department I decided to start my own video production and video marketing company. At that point I had more experience working and I also had learned how businesses and agencies operate.
I love being able to help clients with video and be a partner for their business.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
There are a lot of video production companies out there but what sets us apart is how easy it is to work with us and how easy we make it for marketing team members. Additionally, we understand marketing and how video fits into the whole equation. A lot of times clients tell us that we understand their business better than they do!
When we started, we used to charge per project. This was a custom quoting process for each video (and that’s typically what most video agencies do), but this quoting process was often very time consuming and annoying for the client. It was also quite limiting for the client too, as they often had additional small requests throughout the project.
Because of that we now offer flat-rate pricing where we put no restrictions on how many videos we make or the style. Basically, whatever we can film in 3, 6 or 12 days per year is covered from start to finish. All the creative, planning, scripting, production and editing. The flat-rate pricing allows clients to create way more videos and be way more flexible with their content. It’s a huge win for our clients and just makes their job easier.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Grand Rapids is home to a lot of cool places to eat and explore. Of course, I’d go downtown and visit any one of the great restaurants we have. Beards Deli is a favorite of mine, same with the Knickerbocker, by new Holland Brewing. You also can’t go wrong visiting Lake Michigan, my favorite beach would be Kirk Park where we can take our Australian Shepherd, Piper. I run a lot, so Millennium Park or the Kent trails is a must visit if you are active.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents have a very successful business. I watched them start it during the 2008/2009 recession, So I was able to lean on their expertise in how a business should operate and in the first few years I started I leaned on them a lot.
My wife, Melissa as well. Encouraging me to start it and of course putting up with all the long hours and extra time and resources I put into it.
There were also a couple key individuals who I had met or worked with at my previous jobs that ended up being clients when i started my business, and it’s clear I wouldn’t of got as far without them.
