Meet Jenita Smith | Owner of Sweetjays Bakeshop (retail storefront) and Detroit Rolling Sweets (a mobile dessert truck)

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenita Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenita, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk-taking is an interesting subject. The role of taking a risk played a huge factor in growing my business to a retail storefront. I had always played in safe by working a 9 to 5 and only doing my business on the weekends. I was comfortable with having a guaranteed check deposited in my account every two weeks. However, I wasn’t satisfied. I wanted to know what it would be like if I dedicated the 40 hours that I gave to someone else’s business to my own. I leaped and left my career to pursue my baking full-time. In 2021, I started a dessert food truck and then later opened a retail bakeshop in January 2023. This was a huge risk, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Before pursuing my passion full time I spent 20 years as an Educational Consultant. I completed a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education and a Master’s Degree in Education. I’ve worked in the Defense Industry, Manufacturing, Automotive, Software, and others designing education programs for adult learners. I’ve experienced a great deal of success in my career, but it didn’t give me the same joy and satisfaction as baking.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The downtown area is always the heart of any city. In Detroit, there are plenty of restaurants, entertainment venues and things to do to have a great time.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely have to shout out the Michigan Small Business Development Center. I worked with a business consultant in 2020 who helped me with my business plan and getting all of my big ideas on paper. I also would have to shot out my realtor who helped me locate the perfect space for my bakeshop. I also must shout out my attorney for reviewing lease agreements to ensure I was covered. I’m also thankful to many friends and family who have believed in my brand from its inception.
