We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauri Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lauri, every day, we talk about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have always enjoyed baking and making fun cakes and cupcakes for my boys’ birthday parties. During COVID I took a cookie decorating class and thought “wow this is fun”. I shared some of my cookies on my personal Facebook page and not long after, a family friend asked me to make cookies for her grandson’s 1st birthday. I continued to make cookies and share photos and then created Lauri’s Sweet Treats. I had no idea how many people love custom decorated sugar cookies.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started my home baking business in 2021 after taking a cookie decorating class. It has been so much fun to learn the world of cookieing. There are many Facbook groups dedicated to cookie decorating and I continue to learn new tips and tricks every day. I also offer cupcakes, cake pops and chocolate covered pretzels. I work part time outside the home as well so I am learning how to balance both jobs. I love being able to help people celebrate all the special occasions in their lives. I have made cookies for birthdays, gender reveals, baby showers, bridal showers as well as many holidays. It’s fun to see all the different themes that people come up with for their parties. And being able to create them in cookie or cupcake form never fails to make me smile!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many fun things to do in Metro Detroit. I love going to Eastern Market in the summer, buying fresh veggies from all the vendors. Walking the Dequindre Cut is a great way to spend the afternoon. Downtown Farmington is also fun with so many unique restaurants to sample. I also love hiking Hines Drive and Kensington Metropark to feed the birds and chipmunks. I would also include a trip to Michigan State to watch a football or basketball game. Go Spartans!!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
my family has been incredibly supportive of me starting this business. My husband is an artist so he helps me with design execution, my boys help spread the word to their friends and my sisters and nieces encourage me to keep trying new things. The cookie world is very welcoming and I have made great friends through a Facebook group called Michigan Cookiers.
