Meet Stef Muir | Fashion Designer & Events Content Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Stef Muir and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stef, what role has risk played in your life or career?
At just 23 years old, I quit my job in Michigan to book a one-way flight to Los Angeles without a job lined up or a long-term place to live. I see now what a huge risk I took. But at the time, I was just following my heart and the voice in my head that said to go. Those first few months were filled with a mixed bag of emotions. It was scary but exciting. Intimidating but motivating. Even a little paralyzing at times, but always inspiring. I quickly realized I had only two choices — fail or succeed. And now, 7 years and 2 business later, I’m so grateful for the risk I took and how rewarding it’s been. Everything I know now, I learned from my experience living in Los Angeles and from the people who mentored me and inspired me along the way. I look at taking career risks so differently now — the rewards far outweigh the fear.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started two completely different businesses: 1.) Theodora, the fashion brand I have dreamt of starting since I was in college and 2.) Content Concierge, an online marketing agency, where I primarily film special events and create videos/content for my clients. Each are special to me — I’m so passionate about what goes into both.
Fashion has been a love of mine since I was a young girl and didn’t realize I wanted to make a career of it until I got older. I’ve always been determined to do something I love for a living following the old adage “Do something you love for a living and you won’t work a day in your life.” I created my Theodora brand to appeal to women who want to feel feminine and confident — whether they’re going out or lounging at home. My collection started with jewelry and I’m now incorporating sleepwear pieces. The hardest part about starting Theodora was working with people I could rely on to help bring my vision to life and my product to market. It wasn’t easy. People misrepresented their manufacturing capabilities and delivery dates. Although I faced many of these different challenges multiple times throughout the process, I refused to give up. With patience and fortitude, I officially launched my slippers — the first of many products to come in my sleepwear collection.
Content Concierge sprung out of another passion of mine — taking photos and creating videos. Prior to launching my own business, I worked with many brands on their social platforms creating content, helping build their brand and increasing their followers/engagement. As I built a reputation for being successful in this area, it was a natural next step for me to create my own agency and extend my services to even more businesses. I’ve recently expanded to include special events such as weddings, engagements, showers and more to capture what are once-in-a-lifetime moments for so many people.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When my friends come to visit me in Detroit, I have a few go-to places I like to take them. Starting with breakfast, one of my favorites is James Oliver; they have the best bagels. I love Commonwealth in Birmingham for lunch. The Candy Bar and Evening Bar in Detroit are two of my favorites spots for a drink. And lastly, my recent go-to dinner restaurant is Leila, which is downtown.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to shoutout Crystal Koro, owner of Facify and Crystal Clear Skin and Beauty. She’s a true inspiration and supporter of my entrepreneurial journey. She was one of the first people I met in Los Angeles and we quickly connected. Not only is she a mentor, but also a great friend. She gave me constructive business advice as I began both of my brands, while providing valuable connections to other successful entrepreneurs. I remain in awe of the career she has built for herself.
