Meet Chelsea Chomos | Registered Psychologist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsea Chomos and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chelsea, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I had a ‘problem solver’ or ‘solution-focused’ thought process behind starting my own business. I wasn’t happy where I currently was, so first I identified the problem (what is causing me distress?), next I explored possible options (what can I do to solve my problem? What is my ideal solution?), and lastly I determined my first step (what is the first step I need to take to move towards this solution?).
What should our readers know about your business?
Nalu Psychology is my private psychology practice where I provide counselling, assessment, and education support services. My training and experience is what sets me apart from other psychologists. Prior to becoming a psychologist, I worked in Education for the better part of two decades. My experience as a classroom teacher, learning resource teacher, and school counsellor gave me invaluable experience that I bring to my current practice. I have the lived experience and understanding of the challenges that students face in today’s over-crowded, under-funded classrooms. This first-hand experience allows me to direct support in a meaningful way and work with my client’s education team to bridge support. School teams love working with me, because I get it. I understand their world and know what is needed to support my client (their struggling student).
I got to where I am today by taking it one step at a time. There were challenges along the way, but when one presented itself, I problem-solved my way through it and just kept going. A lesson that I learned is that you can’t control everything. Recognize when you come up against something that is out of your control, accept it, then start problem-solving your way around it. Another lesson that I would pass along to anyone looking to change careers or open their own business would be to have a clear end goal in sight, and then outline the first step needed to work towards that goal. Don’t think about all of the steps, all at once. Just focus on the first step, and then once that first step is out of the way, you can look to the next step.
Life isn’t always easy, but as Ben Platt sings, “tough times don’t last, tough people do.” At Nalu Psychology, I work with clients to equip them with the tools they need to get through the tough times, to heal, grow, and thrive.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. If there was anyone looking to visit this prairie city, I would hope that it is in summer, when the days feel endless, the weather is glorious, and the skies come alive with our unmatched sunsets and (if you are lucky) Northern Lights display. Our pizza is some of the best in the country, so anyone visiting will want to check out the unique recipes found at Western Pizza. If you are coming from the US, poutine at McDonalds and ketchup chips are another must!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would not be where I am today without the full support of my husband. Practically a single parent for the last year, he picked up all the slack and many responsibilities around the house and with our children, allowing me to focus the long, hard hours needed to change career paths and open my own practice.
