Meet Karter Johnson | Literacy Influencer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Karter Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karter, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I read a newsletter that said that if 3rd graders couldn’t read well, they had to repeat that grade. I also learned that the lack of books in their homes was also part of the literacy issue that some kids go through. This made me think of all the kids who don’t have books in their homes and that made me want to help them.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Our organization, Build a Kid’s Library sends books to kids once a month. What makes our nonprofit organization different from others is that most book-sending organizations often charge people to receive books. But in our program, we send books at no cost. So families can receive books without having to worry about how to pay for them.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I could take my friend to Heidelburg St so I could tell him about Magic Trash and his works after reading the book so we could experience the book ‘Magic Trash’. I could also take him to Campus Martius so he can see all the events there.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank the Raising a Mogul Company for helping me learn how to start this business and for different methods on how to make this nonprofit organization a success.
