Meet Alex Wood | Freelance Writer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Wood and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
While most of the time I don’t think this should be the case, back when I decided to become a content creator, I had an opinion and wanted people to hear about it. I felt that if I learned to use different things, I would be more successful. My website is a place for sports writers to come and showcase their work and attempt to get hired and find a more permanent position than what they’re doing when I meet them.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a freelance writer, mostly about motorsports, but I dabble in sports and entertainment as well. I’d say my area of coverage is what sets me apart, mainly because you don’t see many writers cover a NASCAR race one day and a concert the next.
I got started by taking a journalism class in high school. From there, I enjoyed what I did, so I made a website where I presented my work, and it all led to NASCAR media certification in 2023. It was not easy, but people want to talk me down and say it’s easier than I think. That’s far from the truth as it’s a lot harder to get media certification than what’s led on. I was rejected three times before I received a yes from NASCAR. Fans also try to befriend me, not to engage with me, but to take advantage of my connections. I have since learned to block the people exhibiting the red flags of a typical wannabe journalist.
I’ve learned not everyone will like what I say and not everyone will like me. People will make themselves look like fools simply for trying to tear you down because they disagree with you.
I’d like people to know that the best way to get in touch with me for a story is through LinkedIn,
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Growing up in St. Joseph, you have to check out the downtown area. My typical day is breakfast at the iHop in Benton Harbor and a walk through the arts district, and when you go downtown St. Joe, grab a coffee at Forte Coffee Shop. Also stop in Coach’s Bar and Grill in Stevensville for lunch.
Kalamazoo has a lot going for it. Take in a WMU football game and head to Portage and visit the Crossroads Mall. For all your coin and sports card needs, Scott’s on Westnedge has you covered. Want to take in some thrills? Kalamazoo Speedway is your place because outlaw late models are the best in the country there. Fridays night will be great if you take in a race. Support your local short tracks.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I just want to shout out a few people who have helped me get through my hardships, especially my former English professor at Lake Michigan College, Sean Newmiller. Thank you for your guidance along my educational journey and help me become better at what I do.
My long-time friend, Carson Hocevar and his family. I’m proud of you and what you’ve been able to do. I’m glad to see you’re living the dream and you’re going to do some great things in your future and I can’t wait to cover it.
My family has supported me as well, and I thank them for bringing racing into my life.
And to everyone who reads my articles, I want to thank them as well. It’s always good knowing people are connecting with each other and listening to each other.
