We had the good fortune of connecting with Forest Photographer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Forest, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
One of the main thought processes that I had behind starting my own business largely has to do with my want for a good work life balance and for the freedom to pursue the work that I want to do in the way that I want to do it. Going into business for myself allows me to decide the hours I work, excluding what I need to do to earn enough to cover necessary expenses. I also get to decide when I put those hours in. If there are important obligations I have to honor for friends and family or if I simply want a bit of a break, I can decide to work fewer hours. Conversely, I can work more if I want to save up.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a photographer from the West Michigan Area. While I do all types of photography, I am mostly known for my nature photography. The inspiration for my work mainly come from my experiences in and love of nature, my interest in the sciences, and my various travels. I have been doing photography on a hobby basis since high school and have started doing it professionally since the beginning of 2024. You can find me on IMPRNT selling prints and other such paraphernalia as well as at Fulton Street Market and other sites to be announced. On top of prints, I provide photography sessions and photo touch up sessions. In the near future I plan to open my own store through my website and to begin blogging to produce documentary and photojournalistic articles. Keep an eye on my website for updates on both.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One activity on the docket would be hiking. In spite of what one might think for an urban area, the Grand Rapids area has a good few quality hiking parks. I would also likely take them scuba diving at my local dive shop. In terms of downtown activities, we have multiple excellent museums, such as the Grand Rapids Public Museum, the Grand Rapids Art Museum, and the Gerald R Ford Presidential Museum. For dinner I would take them to some local restaurants such as the Electric Cheetah and the Corner Bar.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would have to dedicate my shout out to my family. They have been immensely supportive in my goals regarding becoming a photographer. Having a supportive homelife has made my journey to becoming a professional photographer much easier. I also have to thank my friends for their support.
