We had the good fortune of connecting with Melanie Matthews and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melanie, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Success comes in all different forms. However, for me personally, success always comes down to happiness and family. This is the exact reason why I started my business in the first place. I was looking for a way to have a better balance between earning an income and being a present parent and wife. This feeling of needing to be home more and be more flexible with my time led to me becoming an entrepreneur. Success in my business looks a bit different than personal success though. Growth in my business is my biggest priority. Whether that means growing in revenue or growing in impact, both are keys to having a successful business.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the owner and creator of The Homestead Fam, a brand that helps people live a more self-sufficient life, especially in the kitchen. I am a recipe book author and am currently working on expanding to offer an educational community and a line of high-quality kitchen products. I am so excited to keep growing my business and helping people develop a closer relationship with their food.
Like any business, there have been growing pains and a lot of things to learn. I learned early on to not try and do it all alone. You do not have to be an expert in everything, you just need to know who to ask or where to go for help.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am such a homebody, but when I do want to get out and have a weekend with friends, here’s some of my favorite things that might be on the agenda:

-A trip to Gwinn Girl Winery
-Lunch at Max and Emily’s Cafe
-Small town shopping in Downtown Clare
-A spa day at Paisley Sage Studio, Salon and Spa
-A trip to Uncle Johns Cider Mill
-A day spent at Dow Gardens
-A walk through Bunyd Hill Nature Preserve

A huge shoutout to my former business coach who helped me see what was truly possible and guided me in the right direction.
