Meet Julia Curran | Jewelry Metalsmith

We had the good fortune of connecting with Julia Curran and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Julia, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Honestly, I’ve always known I wanted to pursue an artistic and creative career. As a kid, I didn’t enjoy sitting at a desk in school all day—I needed to be active, working with my hands, and working on some creative project. The idea of a traditional desk job just never appealed to me.
I was aware of the challenges that come with an artistic career, but for me, the creative freedom and variety were worth the risk! I wanted to wake up every day to something different, something that would challenge my mind and let me do what I love.
I explored many different art forms before discovering metalsmithing, which has kept me engaged because there’s always a new technique to learn or a new idea to try. It’s a craft that never gets boring!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Since starting Metal + Stone Goods, my husband and I have lived in Arizona, Hawai’i, and now Grand Rapids, Michigan, where I make jewelry from my home. I believe what sets my work apart is the way I draw inspiration from these places I have lived. My designs are a reflection of the beautiful landscapes I’ve experienced. I often incorporate turquoise, which reminds me of the stunning Sonoran Desert in Arizona. I source pearls from a tiny shop I discovered during our time in Hawai’i, and I even use beach glass found along the coasts of both Hawai’i and Michigan. My approach to design is simple and minimal, allowing the natural beauty of each stone to be the focal point, adorned just the way it was meant to be.
Professionally, I’ve gotten to where I am by taking things one day at a time, staying consistent in my craft, and working to grow my presence through social media and local markets. It hasn’t always been easy, but it has definitely been worth it! The journey has taught me that there will be slower seasons, but those times are temporary. I’ve learned not to get discouraged because better seasons of growth and encouragement always follow. I’m incredibly grateful for the support I’ve received along the way, and every day I continue to learn and push myself to try new things. My business is still small, but I’m hopeful it’s on the verge of something bigger—maybe that day is closer than I think!
Metal + Stone Goods is:
Distinctive: I create one-of-a-kind pieces, ensuring that each stone is unique and showcased in a way that enhances its natural beauty.
Well-Crafted: Every piece is handmade with attention to detail, and I take pride in ensuring that only the highest quality jewelry leaves my studio.
Conscious: I’m mindful of the environmental impact of my work, using ethically sourced stones, high-quality metals, and sustainable practices like recycling materials and using eco-friendly packaging.
Through these values, I hope my work not only stands out but also makes a meaningful impact!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is such a fun question!
First, I’d take them to stunning Lake Michigan, where we’d spend the day or two on the beach enjoying a picnic lunch, cold drinks, and refreshing dips in the lake. This is the epitome of a Michigan summer, and it really doesn’t get much better than this!
For food, we’d definitely explore some of my favorite spots downtown. We’d grab dinner at Café Mamo, Butcher’s Union, and The Commons—each has a very fun and different vibe. Of course, there’d be many coffee stops at MadCap and Stovetop Roasters, and we’d top it off with a drink or two at Eastern Kille or maybe a glass of wine at Château.
We’d also have to do a tour of all the great thrift stores downtown, like Otono, Better Aged Vintage, and other hidden gems.
A stop at the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park would likely be on the list—it’s such a beautiful, relaxing place to wander and take in the art and nature.
And finally, there would have to be some cozy afternoons at home with the windows open, movies, and crocheting—a perfect way to end any day.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my extraordinary husband. He signed me up for my first metalsmithing class back in 2019, knowing it was something I had always wanted to try, and he’s been my biggest supporter ever since. From encouraging me to turn it into a small business to pushing me to keep growing, he’s always been there, believing in me and what I create.
I truly wouldn’t be able to continue this journey without him—when the sacrifices and challenges of running a small business feel overwhelming, he has encouraged me to keep going. He comes to every market with me, cheering me on and showing unwavering belief in my work!
