We had the good fortune of connecting with Latrese Fedrick and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Latrese, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When my daughter was about 3 months old she developed cradle cap and eczema. It became so severe that her hair began to come out in clumps. Seeing my baby suffer with uncontrollable dry skin and itchiness was heartbreaking. As a mother I was willing to do whatever it took to fix the problem.

After multiple visits to the pediatrician I quickly learned that I was not comfortable with the ingredients of the prescriptive creams and over-the-counter options. I began researching natural remedies for skin care and found a natural oil remedy online. After mixing it I realized this was going to be messy. But, I tried it. I would saturate her hair with the mixture and put her in an outfit I wasn’t concerned about it getting ruined.

After a day or two the improvements to her scalp and temperament were quite noticeable. The redness and swelling from scratching had subsided. She was not as irritable because she was not itchy all the time. So, I continued using the mixture instead of the traditional baby skin care products. As her scalp, improved I began using it on her body and within 2-3 weeks her skin completely changed.

It was then I became passionate about creating natural skin and hair products. I began looking for a way to use the oils in different forms so we wouldn’t be so greasy. After a lot of research, tests and trials I developed a formula for a body butter that absorbed into the skin without an oily residue. Later I developed a formula for a lotion and that is how The Eden Collection was born.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
There are a growing number of natural hair and body products available. What sets us apart is our story and our goal. Most people don’t realize that our skin is our largest organ. Therefore, our goal is not only to provide safe, healthy, skin and hair care products. We work to educate and encourage people to live healthier lifestyles.

Beauty is a reflection of who you are. When you look good you feel good. Today you can only really feel good when you are taking care of yourself. Self-care is not only important it is a necessity. Having an excellent quality of life includes knowing the status of your health and taking the appropriate steps to improve or maintain a healthy lifestyle. Being healthy internally will be displayed externally. The Eden Collection’s goal is to encourage and promote total wellness of the mind, body, and soul.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love to host gatherings for my family and friends. I plan my itineraries around three things and one theme in mind: All themes include love, fun and food.
Whenever my guests visit, I want them to know they are going to have a good time.
Food! There are some amazing local dining options but I personally love to eat at home. I was blessed to marry a man that loves to cook and does it well. His lamb chops are the best!

Places to go! Some of my favorite places to visit in the city are museums like the DIA and The Charles H. Wright Museum. I love art and music. Therefore, I would also check to see what concerts and artists are performing. The Detroit Opera House or The Fisher Theater always has an array of show options so we could catch a matinee. I do love the shops in The Fisher Theater like “Pure Detroit” or the “Peacock Room.” I enjoy seeing the preservation of the original architecture.
I also enjoy being outdoors so a visit to Blake’s Orchard would be a fun family outing. However, I do love an adventure so we would sneak away for a day or two to a local beach and enjoy the sand dunes on some ATVs in or near Silver Lake.

By midweek, it’s time for some praise and worship so we may attend a mid week service. Then we will have brunch at Toast in Ferndale, whose atmosphere is such an energy boost and fun place to enjoy the early afternoon. My husband and I love to barbecue, so by the end of the week we would bring additional family and friends together to reflect on the week, share great food, music and play silly trending tiktok games.

By the last night, I’m sure we all would be tired from a full week of activities so we would end their visit with a family campfire, making s’mores and drinking hot chocolate. After the campfire, we would set up our blankets and projector screen to watch an outdoor family movie. Once the movie is over we would call it a night so my guests can get a restful night before their travels the next morning.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I give honor to God for all of His many blessings. My husband, family and friends for encouraging and supporting me to try new things. Also my friend Esther Amunga for believing in me and making this opportunity possible.
