We had the good fortune of connecting with Alyssa Gutknecht and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alyssa, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I have always toyed around in my head with the the idea of wanting to paint- specifically watercolors. I was so afraid to try, that I literally went most of my adult life appreciating art but being too intimidated to take the first step. With no experience or training in art I didn’t know where to begin.
During 2020, when most of the world was shut down, I grabbed watercolor supplies at my local grocery store. I fell in love with the way watercolor moved and changed, always unexpected and unplanned. Four years later, I still love it. It brings me a lot of joy and happiness being able to paint all the ideas that float through my head.
In September 2024 one of my paintings was chosen to participate in Grand Rapid’s Artprize 2024. Something I never would have imagined I’d be able to participate in.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m most proud of my painting being chosen to participate in Artprize, located in Grand Rapids. As a mom of two, I don’t often have a lot of extra time to devote to painting. I’ve had to work to give myself space to create and paint. The most challenging part is finding the time to devote to my art. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is if your heart truly wants to do something, don’t let fear stand in your way. Time is so precious! Failure is a part of learning a new skill. I’ve failed many times and thrown many paintings into the bin. Keep learning and growing and find your community!

My favorite thing to paint are birds that are native to Michigan. I love birds and the freedom they represent. My paintings are loose abstract watercolors, often painted in earth-tones.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spots in Holland are-
Kin coffeehouse
Fris Art supply shop
The view on Mt Pisgah
Hemlock park in West Olive Bowerman’s Blueberry Farm

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband, my kids, my parents and my siblings have always been very supportive and helped me chase some of my goals in art.
