Meet Elizabeth Schmuhl | Multidisciplinary artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Elizabeth Schmuhl and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elizabeth, career-wise, where do you want to be in the end?
There is no end: there is only make. I really believe the thing is to do the thing. Make art. End of career for me means when I’m no longer alive.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an artist who has more than one art form she practices. I dial up my practice in a particular area depending on what’s going on in my life. Dance, writing, and painting are all art forms I work in. I try not to get too caught up in my output but instead focus on the practice of it all. I’m also a person who loves to learn. This is central to my art practice: the work is never done. There is always something more to do or try.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Detroit is such an incredible city. So much wonderful food, music, etc. But the people are at the center. I’d introduce them to my friends, who are all brilliant and artistic. We’d likely spend time on Belle Isle, one of my favorite places in the city.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Eileen Cropley, a former member of the Paul Taylor Dance Company and Martha Graham’s Company first introduced me to modern dance. She opened up a huge door for me, which shaped the way my life moved and continues to move. She is a huge inspiration in how I live and why I make art.
