We had the good fortune of connecting with Macy Gerig and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Macy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I got my NETA Group Fitness Instructor certification and started classes, I realized that I couldn’t just teach a fitness class. While I loved to teach, fitness was more for me. Fitness was a way to connect with God. I would put my AirPods in, turn on worship music, and lift. It was my time, during my TBI, to get away from the world and connect with the Lord. I would pray during my workouts. I needed the Lord’s strength because I was in such a vulnerable time in my life. The life I knew was taken away from me due to a career-ending concussion from soccer. While most of my days were migraine-oriented, my time to exercise was my way of coping with never being able to play soccer again. As I taught fitness classes, I realized I wanted to share my exercise time. I started “Worship Morning Cycling” at the cycling studio I worked for. It was filled with worship, prayer, and devotions. I realized that I wanted to walk alongside of people, individually, in their physical and spiritual life. I wasn’t able to fully connect with them in a group setting as I could if I got my personal training certification. I obtained that six months later and started Worship’n’Workout, focusing on teaching people how to use their exercise as an active worship, through personal training services.

What should our readers know about your business?
Worship’n’Workout is an online personal training platform that teaches people how to use their exercise as an active worship. Through the platform, I share my two published books, “Dear Teen: We’re in this Together” and “A Step Forward: A Worship’n’Workout Devotional.” I have apparel centered on positive, Christian tanks, crewnecks, and more. I have local events available to host Worship’n’Workout Live Workout Events at local church’s, health clubs, or gyms. I have all of my virtual training programs, available to people around the world. In all aspects, my priority is to show people that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. We have to take care of our body, focusing on an internal change. I want people to feel comfortable in their skin and lose the weight they have desired; but, I want people to prioritize their spiritual health first. I want them to learn to love to exercise – not because they want other people to view them differently. I want people to fall in love with exercise, so they can create habits that last far longer than the time they’re with me. I want them to love strength training, so they can pick up their grandkids and run around with their kids for the rest of their life. I want them to workout, so they can complete the tasks the Lord has called them to do. Through my platform, I have been able to walk side-by-side with people on their nutrition, exercise program, and relationship with the Lord. Real people have experienced their bodies as a GIFT instead of burden. Real people have seen what it means to workout for their mental health and devote it to the Lord. With that being the center of my business, the Lord has blessed me with new activities. I have been able to speak on radio stations, churches, youth groups, gym events, and individually to my clients.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would absolutely take them to East Grand Rapids. I love to grab coffee at Starbucks and walk around Reed’s lake. The restaurants in East GR are unbelievable. If I had to do a full “tour,” I would take them to Stovetop Roasters coffee, downtown to the Blue Bridge, Ginza for sushi and hibachi, and then on a hike around Calvin’s campus.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First off, I want to thank my fiancé, Beau, for always encouraging me to lead where the Lord follows. He was with me through my entire business creation process and has been nothing but the biggest supporter I could’ve ever asked for throughout the entire process. In April before I officially launched virtual training through Worship’n’Workout, I attended a virtual coaching seminar with Kelsie Dawn Langohr with SheRises, Inc. Through the three day virtual seminar, I was given tools to start my coaching business in a way that I could control and maintain while in school. Ultimately, I would not be anywhere without the Lord guiding my way and leading me on His path.
