We had the good fortune of connecting with Brady Madden and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brady, we’d love to hear about a book that’s had an impact on you.
I read Tim Ferriss’s book The 4 Hour Workweek back in 2015 and my life has never been the same since.

I had always wanted to work from home, but remote work was far less common, even in 2015, and remote jobs were few and far between. That book helped guide me to make adjustments to my career path so I could gain skills to better position me to get a remote job.

It took a while, 5+ years actually, but in January of 2020, I finally went fully remote with starting my own business, Evergreen Digital – SEO for Cannabis Companies. Of course… about a month and a half after that the rest of the world went remote too…

My main goal of being remote was to be location independent so I could travel more, and experience more places and cultures, amongst other reasons. The pandemic delayed travels a bit, and altered them from Europe to the US but my wife, having also gone fully remote before the pandemic, and I decided to put all of our stuff into a storage unit and travel around the country spending about 30 days at a time in one place. (The 30 day mark is where you get the best discounts with ABnB and similar sites.)

We spent nearly 3 years traveling and working remotely. In that time we visited many places but lived for extended periods in:

Seattle, WA
Portland, OR
Lake Tahoe, CA
Carmel by the Sea, CA
Big Sur, CA
San Diego, CA
Barbados
Austin, TX
Denver, CO
Grand Haven, MI
Asheville, NC
Phoenix, AZ
Puerto Rico
Playa Del Carmen
Lisbon
Croatia
Buenos Aires

I don’t have a pitch or anything to sell you about doing what I did, and certainly not bragging as this has all been done before. I’m just a regular dude who read a book and got inspired to live the way I had always dreamed of, so I made it happen using someone else’s blueprint.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started Evergreen Digital in 2020, a month before the pandemic hit. Talk about timing, right?

Previous to starting Evergreen, for 15+ years I worked in digital marketing, specifically in regulated industries like supplements and vitamins, as well as for B2B companies. This experience proved invaluable when I made the shift to cannabis 7+ years ago.

Why cannabis? Personal experience. I’ve struggled with Ulcerative Colitis for about 15 years, and cannabis, along with other wellness practices, has been a huge help in managing inflammation and other UC issues.

The thing is, when I first entered the cannabis space as a Marketing & eCommerce Director on the CBD/hemp side, I noticed something:

Most SEO agencies had NO CLUE how to handle cannabis businesses.

They’d either:
– Apply cookie-cutter SEO strategies that ignored industry regulations
– Refuse to work with cannabis companies entirely
– Charge insane prices for basic services

I knew there had to be a better way.

That’s why I founded Evergreen Digital – to provide real SEO expertise specifically for cannabis companies. No fluff, no BS, just results-driven strategies that actually work in this industry.

Was it easy? Hell no.

I launched right as COVID hit, had to navigate constant regulation changes, and face the stigma that still exists around cannabis.

But here’s what sets us apart:

– We ONLY work with cannabis companies. This isn’t a side gig for us.
– We understand the unique challenges of marketing cannabis products and services
– We focus on results that impact your bottom line, not vanity metrics
– We’ve helped companies go from zero organic presence to dominating their local markets

The biggest lesson I’ve learned?

You don’t need to follow the traditional playbook to succeed. Sometimes being different – being the “weird” SEO company that only works with cannabis – is exactly what makes you valuable.

What do I want the world to know about Evergreen?

We’re not just another SEO agency. We’re advocates for this industry. Every time we help a cannabis business improve their online presence, we’re helping normalize cannabis as a legitimate business sector.

That’s what gets me excited to open my laptop every morning.

Seeing our clients succeed despite all the obstacles they face – that’s what I’m most proud of.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If a friend was visiting me here in the TC area for a week I would:
– rent a boat and take them out on Lake Leland, we’d cruise through the narrows and up into Leland and stop to eat at the Riverside Inn
– we’d visit Sleeping Bear Dunes for lots of pictures and a hike
– We’d hit Cherry Republic in Glen Arbor for all things cherry
– We’d have to stop at River Club in Glen Arbor as well for some putt putt
– Another boat rental day and hanging on Glen Lake would be in order
– Grabbing a Pie at Make Believes would be an important stop
– Having a nice dinner at Stella Trattoria would be a must
– Having a day on old mission peninsula would be important, stopping at the main beach on the tip of it, along with the 150 year old General Store. We’d certainly stop by Jolly Pumpkin for some drinks and apps as well. Boathouse for dinner of course
– I’d take them Little Fleet and Coin Slot for some fun around town
– We’d need to play some golf too at Bailey Farms, Grand Traverse (The Bear), and Na-Ga-Ming as well

I’m sure there are more but these are my favorites.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d say shoutout to my wife, Brittany, who supported me 100% when I told her I wanted to quit my job and become an SEO freelancer. She never wavered and always supported me through this process.
