Meet Sam Raimondo | Business Owner & Hairstylist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sam Raimondo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sam, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Risk is scary at times and can be extremely intimidating. I have realized owning my own business that if you never take the risk, you will never know what it could have been. I took a huge risk two years ago leaving the salon I had worked at for five years to open up my own Salon Suite at the age of 22, it definitely was a tough start with everything I needed to learn about being a business owner, but it was the best decision I could have made. Nothing in life comes easy and there will be obstacles, but it should never stop someone from taking a risk.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I always get excited about my continuing education because it allows me to give the best of the best to my clients. Continuing education is extremely important in my industry. I am always taking classes and learning new techniques to stay up with the trends. Starting out so young and with the little knowledge it was a must for me to push myself and keep learning. Some classes we a few hours, a couple days, or even a few months at times. It wasn’t easy with every class, but it got easier over time and it’s a great way to get out of my comfort zones behind the chair. I have learned many things over the years. One of the main things is you have to be able to take any and all feedback weather its positive or negative. It will only make you grow and learn more.
My story:
I knew at a young age I wanted to do hair and when I was sixteen years old, I started beauty school and while I was in beauty school I started at my first salon. I have been doing hair for eight years now. I was an assistant for a couple years and by the time I was eighteen I had my own chair taking my clients. I built my career for two years before getting an assistant. By the time I was twenty-two I went on my own and opened my business. I now have an amazing clientele and hope to be able to open a bigger space and have more chairs in the next few years.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would take a road trip and travel all around Michigan. The first couple days we would be in Traverse city doing some wine tasting and looking at the scenic views. Once we leave Traverse city, I would want to go to Pictured Rocks do some camping and do a kayaking tour on Lake Superior. I would take her to Detroit next, going to Tin Roof one of my Favorite bars downtown. We would check out Ford Field, Little Caesers Arena, and Comerica Park! I would also do a pedal bar tour stopping at different bars throughout Detroit. We would go to Howell as well to check out the M Street Bakery! They have amazing sweets and the best milkshakes.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to acknowledge Tammie Thompson. Tammie is my aunt who has been doing hair 35+ years. Growing up I was always at the salon with her hanging out. Once I started beauty school, I got hired at the salon she worked at and got to learn to from the person who I always inspired to be. I knew I wanted to do hair since I was thirteen years old. I started beauty school during Highschool, just like she did. We worked together for the first five years I was doing Hair. During those years, I learned multiple techniques in color, haircutting, and how to be the best I can behind the chair. I am truly blessed for all of her help and everything she has helped me do to grow behind the chair.
