We had the good fortune of connecting with Shweta Lahudkar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi SHWETA, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
My habit of committing my best effort in anything I do is likely the cornerstone of my establishment and achievement so far. With every commitment I try to teach myself, full involvement, nonjudgemental listening, selfless service, appreciation and encouragement. I have realized that naturally and simply performing my duties helps me build excellent relationships, trust and loyalties with everyone I come in contact with. Given my platform I have my family, Artists, customers, authorities and fellow businesses. Whether crafting highest quality items by my artists or my family’s help and sacrifices towards the shop’s success or whether it is customers satisfaction when they find a perfect well-crafted gift for their loved one, everything under my shop’s roof creates a very satisfying experience for everyone involved and makes them feel valued and appreciated. This attention to detail to every possible aspect contributes to deeper connection among each other, making my shop more than just a place to buy things, it becomes a community hub and a source of inspiration.

To say in a nutshell, all this passion and authenticity witnessed success because I was and will always be committed to it and it showed up in the customer feedback and interest in the past year.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a determined owner who wanted the business to stand out, I took few strategic decisions and then the support and grace filled in for the rest.
I decided to expand the handcrafted artisanal exclusive items to give my shop a distinct identity. I always believed that all handcrafted items carry the satisfaction and passion of the person making it and when we touch and feel those crafts, we can totally feel the connection. This very thought in real had dramatically changed the feel of the shop, making it more vibrant and welcoming so that the customers enjoy the shopping experience and came back for more. The high standard of my products is another mantra that brings back my customers to shop for every occasion and need. I regularly try to stay fresh and bring in newer items to keep their curiosity engaged for new crafts while they come in to look for their favorites.

Most proud and excited about:
As an artisan shop owner, I am definitely very proud of a few things.
A year ago, when I had the shop I started with 25+ local artists and today I have over 270+ small businesses that are local, Michigan and USA based that create high quality, handmade products which reflects the talent, skills, dedication and artistry in our proud land. Giving platform to the quality craftsmanship we have built a loyal customer base who value all the hard work and return time and again. My presence and guidance efforts have nurtured this business to spread its fragrance while maintaining its authenticity and staying true to the creative vision. As a team our success so far helps me to proudly contribute to the local economy and support other artisans by collaborating or sourcing materials ethically.
There is a saying that when a fragrance full flower blooms without saying a word people will come to know about it. My small business has earned accolades and numerous praises, both locally and beyond, for what we proudly offer.
To enhance this experience for our customers I like experimenting with new ideas and new designs with my artists. Every artist associated with my store has a very interesting story about life lessons, passion and unique innovative force behind their art and how this hobby of creating something has bought joy and meaning into their lives. It is extremely exciting and satisfying to give a platform to these amazing talented people to open their channels into the world where more people can appreciate and enjoy their creativity.

How did you get to where you are today? Easy?
For over a decade and a half professionally I was a research scientist, and the area of my interest was ‘Molecular Genetics’. Growing up I always had a very deep love for becoming a physician or a surgeon. I was accepted to a medical school, but it was not in the town where we lived. My dad was very protective for his sweet little girl, so he didn’t want me to go out in the big wild world yet. I respected his decision and still found a way to explore my passion for medicine and research. I got my Masters in Molecular Genetics and applied for Ph.D. at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, that’s where I met my husband. Then we were blessed with a sweet and smart boy in our lives and since then the three of us meant a world to each other. Family was always first for us so instead of picking a full-time job we decided to dedicate my time mainly to our son’s first few years of nurturing and still pursue my passion for research through volunteering at Children’s hospitals research lab. At one point in my husband’s career we felt the need to rethink about the type of mining engineering he was associated with. With new job offers he had a few options to pick from, but when he came to the charming small town, Rogers City, MI, he said, “We are probably not looking anywhere else.” He loved the beauty around here, the nature, the crystal clear Lake Huron and the amazing community. From big research hubs, facing a crossroad in mind at first, I soon realized that sometimes life gently nudges us towards paths we never expected. And having done enough with my full heart in my career, I was satisfied. At that time, it felt best to sail with the flow rather than to resist. We moved to Rogers City for our new chapter, and I fell in love with the place immediately. The slow pace and the fresh lake breeze brought unexpected calming joy. It offered things that were beyond words, something that I was always longing for. Got the strong feeling of “This is it”. While enjoying my time off, I picked up my crocheting hobby that I learnt from my mom growing up. My mom always made very fancy unique dresses. Our neighbor saw me crocheting decent designs and joked that I could unearth my buried treasure and buy a business. I laughed at this thought because I have never dreamt of getting into retail business and opening an artisan gift shop. Fortunately, the very next, we learnt that a gift and vintage furniture business was up for sale. My husband had very positive thoughts about owning a business and going with the flow. My husband’s confidence in me and my committed nature helped us to make the decision to buy this store and business. He made efforts to contact the realtor on Friday, on a Saturday we could schedule to see the building. We made an offer on Saturday night, and Monday it all started. It was that quick.
I opened “Pure Of Heart Emporium”, a gift shop filled with treasures purely made from heart by my Artists. My Husband said, “Many times things are meant to be.” It was meant to be that we moved to Rogers City, that I picked up my passion, and that I had time doing something totally different like this. The shop became a lot more than just a business. It was a way of contributing to the community that had embraced us with full and loving heart. As my shop flourished, I realized that I wasn’t just selling beautiful items; I was fostering curiosity, encouraging learning and strengthening the community, while promoting shopping local and made in Michigan/USA products.
Looking back, I saw how the journey of Life had taken twists and turns and finally, guided me to exactly where I was meant to be. What had once felt like an uncertain detour had transformed into a journey of joy and fulfillment. I have learnt that while life may not always go as planned, embracing the flow with an open heart can lead to surprising and beautiful destinations. “Pure Of Heart Emporium” became a testament to my belief that some things are simply meant to be- and when we let go and sail with the current flow of life, satisfaction and happiness is sure to follow.

It was certainly a unique and exciting journey, not necessarily easy or difficult, but it was sure fulfilling and transformative. I did have challenges— Leaving behind a career I loved, adjusting to a new venture and finding a deep sense of purpose in a different life path. Such transitions often come with uncertainty, but in my case embracing the changes with an open and full heart and willingness to adapt to the new chapter brought me happiness and fulfillment.
Such a journey involves ups and downs– letting go of the familiar, rediscovering hobbies and building something meaningful; takes resilience, adaptability and trust in the process. So, while it might not have been easy, it was worthwhile, and every step contributed to the beautiful outcome that everyone witnessed at the shop and was thankful for. Overcoming any mental dilemmas requires a mix of practical decisions, mindset shifts and a lot of support. I literally had to reframe the whole perspective, viewing the move as an opportunity for growth.
Being new in the retail business, I applied my scientific analytical mindset to research business basics, attended workshops and shows and learnt a lot from others. I started small with baby steps and scaled gradually to minimize the risks.
As a family we are in it together. We embraced the unique qualities of this beautiful small town exploring the natural beauty and people and it didn’t take very long for us to feel welcomed and integrated into the community.

Change is an inevitable part of life, and every change has its twists and turns but the most important thing is to let go of the strong control and embrace that transition. That can be overwhelming, but it’s important to break the challenges down into smaller, manageable steps and then climb them one at a time towards success. Success that greets you along your journey is rarely a solo effort. Along with it, it brings support, builds trust and a sense of belonging to everyone involved. In a nutshell, I always have strongly believed that some things are meant to happen. Sometimes they might not make sense, but we still need to trust the process and follow the flow.

“Pure Of Heart Emporium” is more than just a gift shop. It reflects a journey of embracing change, following hobbies and creating something meaningful for others.

We proudly collaborate with over 270+ American small businesses, that includes over 60+ made in Michigan products/crafts that are unique and handcrafted with love, one-of-a-kind gifts to give my customers an amazing shopping experience, something that can spark your emotions and make connections.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Our town Rogers City is a true and charming gem on the shores of Lake Huron. It is known for its maritime history and is a delightful mix of natural beauty, outdoor activities and super friendly atmosphere. If someone wants to explore the charm of Rogers City I would recommend the following:

The sunrises and sunsets are spectacular on the Huron waters. I would make sure not to miss them. There are multiple lookouts like Seagull point, harbor walk and view, quarry view and 40-mile point lighthouse where one can get the perfect view.

Day 1: Downtown exploration
The arrival day is usually knowing about the town and exploring some great historic sites….. Beginning with a leisurely stroll through downtown one can explore unique shops and galleries offering local crafts and souvenirs. Rogers City is also called Nautical City and knowing the maritime history importance, a visit to Presque Isle county Historical Museum will let you delve into the area’s rich heritage. Enjoying a relaxing evening at the Marina and soaking in the serene views of Lake Huron never fades.

Day 2: Outdoor adventures
What can be better than a nature walks at Hoeft state park, hiking around scenic trails and enjoying the sandy shoreline of Lake Huron. The park site offers a variety of activities like hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing, with three marked loop trails. Don’t forget to pack a picnic to enjoy within the parks picturesque sitting.

Day 3: Maritime History
To know more about the Greatlakes maritime in addition to Presque Isle County museum, 40 Mile Point lighthouse is a historic site with a preserved shipwreck and scenic views.
One can end the beautifully spent day by enjoying local events or concerts available. Rogers City offers a lot of free, clean activities/events and concerts summer long for all ages and gender to enjoy.

Events like:

Day 4: Agricultural experience
Rogers City has farms around that offer fun activities and adventures. One can visit Knaebe’s Munchy Krunchy Apple farm and cider mill to enjoy fresh produce and apple picking. In 2024 Knaebe’s is awarded one of the 5 best apple farms in the USA to visit. Talking about agricultural experiences, around Rogers CIty we also have Moltke Maize Maze corn field to spend a fun filled day. At Moltke Maize Maze you find hidden clues and objects to figure out completing the tasks. After expending all the energy one can relax on a peaceful hayride through the gorgeous countryside. To finish the best spent day at farms nothing like just sitting around the bonfire and listening to hoots and hollers echo off the trees.

Day 5: Nature exploration
One will never forget witnessing the beautiful sunrise from the quarry view. Carmeuse limestone quarry is the largest in the USA and 2nd largest in the world. The quarry view location is like an eye to see the grandness of the quarry. It is definitely something to feel very proud about having in Rogers city. After a pretty and grand morning, it will be perfect to drive to Ocqueoc falls which is the largest and only named waterfall in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The 5-foot drop into a rocky gorge is the highlight of the 34.2-mile Ocqueoc River. Next to do on the list can be a visit to Herman Vogler conservation area for wildlife observation. It is a tranquil 270-acre wooded site featuring seven miles of trails available for summer or winter outdoor activities. Next on list I would include a mesmerizing bike ride along the Huron sunrise trail. It is one of northern Michigan’s most beautiful, miles long, paved paths that offers many good trailheads along the lakeshore for stunning lake views. Currently the trail ends at the Forty Mile Point Lighthouse, a distance of eight miles from Rogers City.

Day 6: Beach day and relaxation
A day to relax can be like spending time at the beach and enjoying swimming and sunbathing and walking downtown to local gift shops for unique finds. Star gazing is one of the favorite activities among all age groups. If it is a clear night beautiful stars, moonrises take you to wonderlands. In Rogers City people have witnessed incredible Northern Lights. After wrapping up dinner check if local boat tours are available for a sunset ride on Lake Huron. Years around the local theater offers performances, events and film festivals showing interesting documentaries.

Day 7: Revisiting the favorite spot and reflecting on all the wonderful memories of Rogers City.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Family is a very strong aspect in my life. At every stage everyone involved made me feel loved, supported and encouraged.
While growing up my family installed very strong values in me which shaped my personality.

When I got married, my husband and kid gave me unwavering courage and confidence. They have been my concrete backbone, my cheerleaders and my constant source of strength, helping me make things happen. I am deeply grateful for their love and belief in me.

After I started business, I got a new family of the fellow businesses and town authorities. A heartfelt shoutout to all my extended families out there. Their support is like the wind beneath my sails propelling me forward every day. Together, we rise stronger. Here’s to shared dreams and boundless possibilities.
