We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeff Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jeff, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I was a lucky, or unlucky, person, depending how you look at it. I didn’t choose to pursue a creative career, it chose me. I was creative from a very early age, reading and writing stories starting at about 6 years old, and beginning to learn music starting around the same time. My passion for writing and music only grew over time, and those loves have defined my whole life. My writing abilities turned into a career in advertising, which continues, and at the same time, I pursued my music, which I’m also recognized for. For the record, I count myself among the lucky ones. I’ve never had to guess at what I’m supposed to be doing here.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Like many other people, it’s certainly been a long and winding path from being a 6 year old with a department store guitar to what I do today as a singer-songwriter. After all that time (and a long hiatus of 17 years when I walked away from doing any music), I’m finally proud of the work I’m producing pretty consistently, the recognition I’ve received as a songwriter and singer among my peers, and the supportive fans who come out to my shows and listen to the music.

If there’s any lesson in my story, it’s to never give up, despite the obstacles and challenges. And stay true to your art and yourself–there’s nothing like authenticity. And people know and feel it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a big Royal Oak guy. So I’d recommend Luigi’s in downtown Royal Oak. A great intimate atmosphere and some of the best Italian around from my dear, longtime friend Luigi Cutraro. Later in the evening, and just around the corner, definitely Oak City Grille where you walk into a Cheers-style vibe with Sean Gagnier behind the bar, and always a singer on the stage behind him.

We’d do a day trip to Ann Arbor and perhaps catch a concert at the Ark or the Michigan Theater there in the evening. We’d visit John King Books in downtown Detroit and explore the stacks for some treasures, and then head to Bronx Bar near Wayne State for a fabulous burger and cold drink.

Most of all, we’d try to catch one of my friends performing to enjoy their music and show support.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Dozens and dozens of people have supported and encouraged me, advocated for me, and helped me. Friends, colleagues, fellow musicians, teachers, professors…it’s a long, long list. But if I have to winnow it down….

Jeff Briggs. A friend since the age of 5. Both of learned music together, had a band together early on, and eventually ended up working together when he opened a studio and I first started recording. Incredible learning experiences and our beginning footsteps into the music business..

Duane Allen Harlick. Duane’s incredible musician and creativity have help me bring my own music to life these past several years, and we’re continually encouraging each other to the next step.

My sister and brother-in-law, Lesley and Terry, who have been my biggest supporters from the earliest age while also propping me up during life’s toughest moments.

Finally, my wife, Becky. Becky’s love, friendship, patience and unflinching honesty and guidance have profoundly changed my life. I won’t ever be able to thank her enough.
