We had the good fortune of connecting with Trina Weber and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Trina, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Overall nutrition education and counseling positively impacts the world, because, no matter who you are, everyone eats every day, and we can all use a little help with it sometimes. Eating disorders are especially misunderstood by many people, whether it’s healthcare providers, family members, friends, or the person with the eating disorder themselves. I want people with eating disorders to be heard, and their struggles validated. I am excited to be part of a team that helps someone overcome an eating disorder and get their life back.

What should our readers know about your business?
After finishing graduate school in 2003, I began working at Comprehensive Treatment for Eating Disorders (CTED), LLC in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which was owned by Gail Hall, an eating disorder therapist. CTED consisted of therapists and dietitians who provided outpatient treatment for eating disorders.

In 2014, I started my own private practice in Kalamazoo called Trina Weber, MS, RD, LLC. I see people one-on-one for nutrition counseling and am also a certified eating disorder treatment specialist. While eating disorder treatment requires sharing information about meal plans and increasing food variety, there is also a special art to it. If I recommend a meal plan or a specific food challenge, how it will impact the client? It’s like dropping a pebble into a lake: What will be the ripple effect? How can I make sure the client is supported before, during, and after the challenge?

Eating disorders are a dangerous, life-threatening illness. They are never easy to treat and require support from family members, a registered dietitian, a primary care provider, and a therapist who all specialize in treating them. Sometimes family members do not know how to support their loved one and need education. It takes a village to help someone overcome an eating disorder. When they do, it is amazing to watch them blossom!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Southwest Michigan is full of beautiful lakes and trees! I would take my friend along the Portage Creek Bike Path for a run or a walk. Afterwards we’d go to dinner at Main Street Pub. Of course, we’d have to kayak on Austin or Sugar Loaf Lake! We’d spend time in downtown Kalamazoo at a barbecue festival and go to Gazelle Sports to get some shoes or other outdoor gear.

We would bike the Kal Haven Trail from K’zoo to South Haven, enjoy the shops, and head to Clementine’s for lunch.

We would spend a day in St. Joseph at the beach on Lake Michigan and eat at Silver Beach Pizza.

We would spend an afternoon checking out the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts and see a show at either Miller Auditorium or Farmer’s Alley.

We’d have to see a Western Michigan University sporting event – like a football or hockey game!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
