We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Szeltner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve always gravitated towards art and this career lets me use my creativity to the fullest. I’ve taken inspiration for hair color from all aspects – nature, landscapes, animals, food, etc. To me, hair is more than just a feature; it’s a canvas waiting to be transformed.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I specialize in both fashion colors and lived in colors. Whether you’re looking for something bold and unique or subtle and natural, I’ve got you covered. With about 13 years of experience in the industry, I recently fulfilled my dream of opening my own salon, Arcana Hair Co, which I’ve aspired to do since cosmetology school. Building my clientele and perfecting my craft has been challenging but incredibly rewarding.

I faced significant obstacles early on when the cosmetology school I initially attended closed just before my graduation. I had to start completely over at another school with only half of my hours being transferred. Of course I was upset and frustrated at first, but in the end I gained so much more experience and it truly was a blessing in disguise. As cheesy as it sounds, everything happens for a reason, and it got me to where I am today.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are many things to do in St. Clair Shores. One of my favorite spots is a bar called Copper Hop. They feature a different food truck every day and have an attached patio that’s the perfect place to relax and hang out. It’s even dog-friendly, for animal lovers like myself.

There’s also an event we have in our downtown area called the Social District. It runs from May to October on every other Saturday. This event includes food trucks, drinks, vendors, music, and fun activities for everyone. It’s a great Saturday night out!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be here without the unwavering love and support of my family and husband. They have been with me through the beginnings of cosmetology school to the ups and downs throughout my whole career.
