Meet Alisha Shumake | Licensed Esthetician & Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alisha Shumake and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alisha, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I thought long and hard before taking the steps to starting The More You Glow. Was I ready to make the jump into entrepreneurship? Was I confident in my skills – not just in Esthetics but in business? I was happy being an employee until one day, I wasn’t anymore. I wanted more out of my career.
My main motivator was freedom. I wanted freedom with my time, creativity, decision making. I figured that if I was going to work as hard as I was then I could work that hard for myself and reap more of the benefits. Achieve more of a work/life balance, have control over my time, what services I provided, what products I used.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the owner of The More You Glow – a business that provides skin care services. I specialize in customized age management facials and also offer a variety of different services including Oncology Esthetics, lash lifting, lash and brow tinting and facial waxing. I’m a big believer in educating clients and guiding them in their skin care journey. The Esthetics industry is massive and can be complicated to navigate – that’s what I am here for.
My main approach to Esthetics and business alike is integrity, transparency and honesty. It is very important to me to not only “talk the talk” but to “walk the walk” as well. I practice what I preach and will always follow through on that.
How did I get to where I am today? Sheer determination, drive and a lot of hard work. Was it easy? Certainly not but it has all been worth it. I’ve learned to trust my instinct, to take a chance even if it does not pay off the way I want it to. This journey has taught me so much about myself and I’ve grown along with The More You Glow.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A chance to play tourist in my own town? I’m in!
The Detroit metro area is filled with fun places to check out, events to attend and the restaurants are fantastic. Let me just list them:
-Eastern Market for local goodies and to support local biz and artisans
-Detroit Institute of Arts for some culture
-Concert at The Fillmore or St Andrews Hall
-Cider and donuts at Blake’s
-Shopping at The Peacock Room (Detroit), The Lip Bar (Detroit), Bohemian Home (Plymouth), John K King books (Detroit)
-Check out the views at the Detroit Riverwalk (Canada right across the river), see the beautiful fall colors on a walk or drive in Hines Park
-Can’t forget food! SheWolf (Detroit) for some of the best homemade pasta ever, mahi mahi tacos at Barrio (Plymouth), Detroit style pizza at Buddy’s (Dearborn), cocktails at Sugar House and Mutiny Bar (Detroit), coney dogs at any one of the many Coney Island restaurants in the area.
-We love our sports teams here so definitely a Red Wings hockey game at LCA or a Lion’s game at Ford Field.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My fiancé, family and close friends definitely deserve a nod and a massive THANK YOU. I leapt into this with all the determination and drive one person could possess but in the times of doubt, uncertainty, fear and slow-moving growth they never once doubted me. They have cheered for me and supported me since day one.
