Meet Amelia Currier | Artist; Sculptor, printmaker and collagist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Amelia Currier and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amelia, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
In a museum or a gallery, when the viewer looks upon the art displayed, they are only seeing the final resolution of a long, creative journey. The history of all the attempts to resolve, repaint, or recreate the work are not apparent. The romanic view of the artist is one of dashing off the work in a fit of passion, fed by the inherent talent of the artist. The reality is that even the most talented will have failures, misguided concepts and work that is never seen by the public. A work of art is a culmination of the artist’s life experiences, trial and error, pushing through obstacles and attempting new concepts. The result one sees in a museum is the polished diamond of that effort.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My work is an honest expression of what resides in my heart. As such, it is unique in form, element and imagery. I am proud that – despite the ego bashing and unstable reality of being an artist- I have never given up. I work most afternoons and into the evening in my studio. I am motivated partially because I feel that my work touches people. My other motivation is simply that being an artist is my ‘raison d’être’, it keeps me whole and balanced. I want the world to know that what I create is my gift to you, – to open new doors within you, to illuminate your heart.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Detroit is a mecca of pop up galleries, and established galleries. The Detroit Art Institute also houses one of the best collections of paintings and sculptures in the country. There is also a widely varied display of street art and graffiti throughout the downtown area. Greektown is a wonderful, unique area full of restaurants and casinos. It has a European atmosphere and is walking distance to central downtown. The Midtown area of Detroit has many unique restaurants, some vintage, some very modern – there is also much interesting architecture in the Wayne State University Campus to be seen.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my Shoutout to all the people out there who support the arts.
