We had the good fortune of connecting with Andie Furber and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Andie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
While I was living abroad in France, my mother gifted me a 35mm film camera for Christmas. I started carrying it everywhere with me, and it became a way for me to chronicle my life, my adventures, and flex my creativity. I fell in love with film photography because it captures a precise moment in time, and you have to be very considered about which photos you take and which you don’t. There are only 36 on a roll, so it has pushed me to be more observant of the world around me and more discerning of what merits being captured.

After a few years of exploring this new skill and practicing, I started selling prints and booking photography sessions with friends and family, and loved sharing my work. It was so fulfilling to see my art in people’s homes and lives, and I was honored my friends trusted me to capture their biggest moments.

In December 2023, I decided to officially incorporate my business as Furbs on Film (named after my Instagram handle @furbsonfilm) and sell photography prints and stationery. While it’s currently just a side hustle, I’d love for it to grow enough to be my full-time job one day.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Photography is a very dense space filled with a lot of incredible talent. I am particularly proud of my use of exclusively 35mm film. Film is a very sensitive, intentional medium. You have to be considered about what you shoot, in what light, and from what angle. Shooting film has made me so much more observant of the world around me, and has made me stop to study and absorb things I formerly didn’t notice. Simple things like light on a leaf or a flower covered with dewdrops now make me stop, look, and really take them in. I like to think that intentionality and focus translates over to my work.

I am also very proud of how my work serves as a travel diary for myself and others. My favorite artwork to buy represents important places in my life, and I love the idea that my shop can be someone’s destination to find a souvenir of a trip, moment, or special thing they saw while traveling the world.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in New York City, so there is always something new to see, eat, or do. Every time my family visits, I can tailor the itinerary to the person visiting and their version of “New York.” But my favorite fail-safe NYC recommendations include:

Drinks at Dante
Dinner at Via Carota
Late night drinks at Bemelmans
Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge
The Brooklyn Flea
The Met
Late night snacks at Junior’s
Broadway Roulette
American Bar
Baby Luc’s
Lillo
Bagel Pub
Colonia Verde
The Boathouse in Prospect Park
92nd Street Y

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Have to shout out my mom for buying me my first camera, and my friend Max for being my very first paying customer.
