We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley St. Clair and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashley, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success and the success of Ink & Dye is a deep commitment to people over profits. Whether it’s through our work with clients, the advocacy my husband and I do in our community, or the inclusive environment we’ve created at the studio, everything is rooted in genuine care. I believe success comes from standing up for what is right, creating spaces where everyone feels seen and valued, and building authentic relationships. Our brand isn’t just about tattoos and hair; it’s about connection, empowerment, and being part of something bigger than ourselves.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Getting to where I am today wasn’t easy. It took years of dedication, from my early days as an apprentice to traveling the country as a product educator, constantly honing my craft and my approach to the industry. The biggest lessons I’ve learned are the importance of listening, of adapting, and of always leading with authenticity. My brand isn’t just about hair; it’s about community, advocacy and making sure every person who walks through our doors feels valued.

My work is rooted in the art of transformation, I specialize in short cuts that go beyond just style. They are about confidence, identity and self expression. What sets me apart is not just the way I cut, but the connection I build with my clients. I’ve tried my best to create a space where people feel seen , heard and celebrated for exactly who they are. Every haircut is a collaboration to help everyone feel empowered in their own skin.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My hometown and the city Ink & Dye is located in is Milan, MI. We have a population of just over 6,000 people. It is your typical midwest Michigan small town. Over the past 7 years or so it has had a complete transformation. Our historic Main Street has had a facelift and is now home to so many local small businesses. I don’t think we could plan an entire weeks worth of things to do in Milan but I can say we could have a great time making the most of it! Our local coffee shop, The Owl, not only has amazing coffees but at night it turns into a bar and usually hosts local small bands. My go to lunch spot will always be Roy’s. It’s a short walk from our shop, is family owned, and has some of the best burgers you could ever have. If you like shopping we can stroll down Main Street and stop into local business (all owned by women) and shop for everything from clothing to home decor. In the summer, Milan is known for car shows at Wilson Park, drag racing at the famous Milan Dragway and our fireworks display is a huge draw and typically brings in people from all over the area.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To my husband, Thaddeus. There are no words that can fully capture the depth of gratitude and love I have for you. For 16 years, you’ve been my partner in every sense of the word. You’ve stood beside me through every wild idea, every challenge, and every dream – whether it was juggling our schedules during my apprenticeship, holding down the fort while I traveled the country as an educator, or diving headfirst with me into opening Ink & Dye.

Even when you’ve rolled your eyes, knowing I’ve bit off more than I could chew, you’ve never wavered in your support. You’ve believed in me when I doubted myself, lifted me when I felt overwhelmed, and build a life with me that’s more than I ever could have dreamed. Together, we’ve raised four incredible kids and created a business that reflects our passion, hard work and love.

None of this would be possible without you.
