Meet Ayyub Ama | Self-Taught Chef

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ayyub Ama and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ayyub, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from Detroit, Michigan, a city that’s always inspired me with its culture and creativity. My passion for cooking started at home, watching my mom and grandma work their magic in the kitchen. Seeing how they could bring the family together over a meal left a lasting impression on me.
Their love for food sparked my curiosity and pushed me to experiment with flavors and techniques, blending the traditions they taught me with my own style. Growing up in Detroit, with its diverse food scene and strong sense of community, has shaped me into the chef I am today. Everything I create in the kitchen is a reflection of those early memories and the legacy they passed down to me.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a student and full-time employee, my days are already pretty busy, but it’s after work and during my free time that I get to dive into my true passion which is cooking.
I specialize in catering, meal prep, and sharing my culinary creations on TikTok, where I’ve built a platform with over 2 million views and a growing community.
What sets me apart is my ability to blend the flavors and traditions I grew up with into unique dishes that connect with people on a personal level.
Balancing my studies, a full-time job, and my culinary pursuits hasn’t been easy, but it’s taught me the value of discipline and passion.
I’ve faced challenges like time constraints and the pressure of building a brand, but my dedication and the love I have for what I do keep me going. Seeing how my work resonates with people, like my most popular TikTok video with 1.2 million views, reminds me why I started.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that no matter how busy life gets, there’s always room to pursue what you love if you’re willing to put in the work.
My story is about more than just food it’s about family, community, and the power of giving back.
I want people to know that my brand is rooted in love and a commitment to making a difference, whether it’s through a plate of food or an act of kindness.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting Detroit for a week, I’d make sure they had the best time possible. First, we’d hit up the Detroit Institute of Arts to check out some incredible art, followed by drinks at The Brakemen in downtown Detroit. Then, we’d swing by Spkr Box for a fun vibe and good music.
For food, we’d definitely stop by What the Pho for some of the best pho around and Himalayan Flames for amazing Indian cuisine.
Next, we’d explore Eastern Market to check out local businesses and grab some fresh eats, then stroll along the Detroit Riverwalk to take in the views. Mexican Town would be a must for fantastic food, and Campus Martius would offer a great vibe to end the day.
We’d also spend a day at the Detroit Zoo and wrap up the week with some downtime at Belle Isle.
Detroit has so much to offer, and I’d make sure to show my friend all the best spots, from food to fun and everything in between.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my family and the homeless community. My family has always been my foundation, especially my mother, who raised me and my five siblings with so much love and strength. She taught us to go above and beyond for others, to always give what we can, and to lead with kindness. Her lessons shaped who I am today and inspired my passion for not just cooking, but also giving back.
The homeless community also holds a special place in my heart. I believe food has the power to bring people together and make a difference, and I’m committed to sharing that wherever I can. Whether it’s through a warm meal or simply a kind gesture, it’s all about lifting others up. This journey isn’t just about me—it’s about the people who’ve inspired me along the way and the lives I hope to touch through my work.
