Meet B’nathaniel Orlu | Singer & Digital Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with B’nathaniel Orlu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi B’Nathaniel, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic career because I love music. Music allows me to express my emotions and creativity through song. Most importantly, it helps me connect with people who may be feeling the same things but can’t find the words to express it. In those moments of silence, music speaks for them, allowing them to truly feel something.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m most proud of the person I’m becoming every day. Each morning, I wake up determined to be better than I was yesterday. The way I got to the person I am today is, first, through prayer; second, by working hard; third, by facing countless rejections; and lastly, by being patient enough to wait for that one ‘yes’ that would propel my career forward. This journey hasn’t been easy, and I’m still working hard every day.
Currently, I’m pursuing my master’s degree at the University of Michigan, while also being a full-time digital creator. Balancing these two has been challenging, but I’ve managed to overcome obstacles by praying, using the resources around me (because I can’t do it all on my own), and being patient with myself. I keep reminding myself that my time will come, and all the hard work will pay off.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way is to be patient with yourself success doesn’t come overnight. It’s also important to take moments to step back, tune into yourself, and remind yourself of who you are.
I want the world to know that I’m going to make music that touches people’s soul’s and it’s coming soon.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friend were visiting for a week, I’d start by taking them to downtown Ann Arbor to experience the vibrant college culture. We’d explore the shops, restaurants, and maybe even catch a University of Michigan football game to experience the electric atmosphere and traditions. Since it’s getting colder and the holidays are approaching, we’d stroll through downtown to see the streets lit up with Christmas lights and decorations. Next, we’d head to Detroit. I’d take them downtown to settle the ongoing debate of which Detroit Coney Island is the best an essential experience for any visitor. Of course, I’d make sure they get a classic Coney dog with chili cheese fries, and since I know they don’t have it everywhere, I’d introduce them to Vernors, Michigan’s iconic ginger ale. If they’re hungry again later, we’d stop by Bucharest Grill for some famous chicken shawarma with curly fries or straight fries topped with cheese. We’d walk along the Detroit Riverwalk, taking in the beautiful views across the water, and possibly catch a Detroit Lions or Tigers game, depending on the season. We wouldn’t miss a visit to the iconic Motown Museum to dive into the rich musical history of the city. We’d also stop by the Detroit Science Center and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History to round out the cultural experience. To wrap up the trip, we’d drive out to Belle Isle for a relaxing day, exploring the park and enjoying the natural beauty of the island.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, I have to give all the honor and praise to the Most High, because if it had not been for the Lord on my side, where would I be? I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my family, especially my mom. She’s my biggest supporter and my backbone. I also want to recognize my community organization, Black Determined Minds, as well as my musical mentors, Dr. Cheryl Harden and Dr. David Morrow, who have guided me along the way. Lastly, I can’t forget my village, Coby Bennett, Lesh’in Edwards, Gregory C. Brown, Jayla Martin, Sierra Laney, Lauren Williams, Kerrington Griffin, and Kristien Stephenson. These are the people who keep me going.
