We had the good fortune of connecting with Brett Dierolf and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brett, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
We just saw a desire and a need for punk, hardcore and indie shows in the Muskegon area. The music scene here used to thrive but has seen a decline in recent years without a solid venue. Partnering with Rake Beer Project has given us the freedom and ability to book shows with some regularity.

We really don’t view SF Shows as a business. It’s more of a passion project for us. A way to give back to the scene in which we grew up.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I don’t run SF Shows alone. Everything I do is with my partner in crime Jeremy McClary. We have a working relationship in more than just promotion. We’re also in two bands together. Our own bands were really the impetus for us starting SF Shows to begin with. We really wanted a place locally where we could play once in a while as well as a place to showcase our friends’ bands.

We actually compliment each other really well. We both have a background in booking and promoting shows but we also have our own individual skill sets that make working together super easy. Jeremy is a huge gear nerd in the best way possible. He’s a wizard at running sound and creating the atmosphere for each show. I personally have a background in design and some experience in marketing which means we don’t need to outsource for flyer designs. I do all of that in house. I also work in logistics so figuring out schedules and planning each show comes naturally to me.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The obvious choice for Muskegon is to tell this friend to come in the summer. Start the day at Brunch House. Friendliest staff in town and some amazing breakfast food. After breakfast head to the beach for a few hours. Muskegon has some seriously underrated beaches. After the beach, make your way downtown to check out Third Coast Records (cheat code: talk to Paul about 80’s hardcore records, you’ll get some great stories). After buying records, move over to Rad Dad’s for some vegan tacos. Finish the night off by drinking great beer and watching some killer bands at Rake Beer Project.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We definitely want to shout out Rake Beer Project. We literally couldn’t do what we do without them and the space they provide. They also have incredible craft beer. Definitely worth checking out when in Muskegon.

We also need to shout out our friend Sam Rottschafer. He’s arguably the best live show photographer in the game and always makes our shows look amazing.
