We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittney Newton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brittney, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued a creative career because my creativity, at that time, was my outlet. In 2020, I lost my father to COVID and was diagnosed with depression. I needed something where I could express how I was feeling, my highs and lows in a productive way. The first photo shoot I ever creative directed was dedicated to capturing my journey with depression, but in a beautiful way.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets me apart from others is my ability to be transparent about my journey with depression and my sense of determination. I put my struggles into my work and I think people can relate to that. I’m from the city of Detroit and one thing a “D-girl” is going to always be, is a hustler. I attribute all my success to my hustle and networking; word of the mouth is still the best marketing tool. Was it easy? NO! I was terrified when I first started, but a good friend of mine told me “do it scared “, and I’ve been running scared towards my goals ever since. My biggest challenges have always been my challenges with my own mental health. It’s been a journey learning what triggers me vs. what motivates me. Unfortunately the journey is ongoing, however there will be beauty found along the ride.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ok so off top, we’re going to brunch at The Morrie in Royal Oak because sleeping in until about 11am is a must! I always order something different because all the food is good! Then for the nighttime festivities, we’re hitting Floods. Floods has the best greens, mac & cheese and shrimp in the city…oh yeah don’t forget the confetti punch!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The person I would have to dedicate my shoutout to is my mom. My mom hasn’t always understood my decisions but has always tried her best to support me. Moreover, she is the one that is always there when I’m at my lowest. Depression brings some pretty low feelings into my energy and my mom tries to do her best to support and encourage me through all the lows.
