We had the good fortune of connecting with Coyé Tyler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Coyé, what role has risk played in your life or career?
To most people, risk-taking is a gamble. I think of risk-taking as an opportunity to do something great. There’s a cliché quote that says “You miss one hundred percent of the shots you don’t take.” This is very true for any and everything. Listen to that voice that tells you your idea or creative thought is a good one. Why? It’s because nine times out of ten it actually is. Self-doubt comes from second-guessing and second-guessing stems from not wanting to take a risk. So go ahead and follow your creative mind. I invest money into my creativity, and there’s always going to be that fifty-fifty chance that it doesn’t get seen or heard. But knowing I took that risk sharing my story, and my creativity, what I love with the world is all that matters to me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am my art and my art is me. I feel like that’s a narcissistic statement but it is true. I give a lot of myself and put it in the art I make. Whether it’s music or a digital piece, it came from somewhere real inside of me. DFRNT (different) is the brand I’m building from the ground up. My goal is to reach the people who feel they don’t relate to the status quo. The people who don’t fit other people’s social norms. People who want to do their own thing, have their own ambitions and drive to be their best selves. Where being DFRNT is acceptable and not rejected and frowned upon because someone has a different view. I am excited to share my art and my music. Both will all fit under the umbrella theme of being DFRNT (different). There are many lessons I’ve learned leading up to the beginning of my journey as an artist. The main one I took heed of was risk-taking progresses you further than procrastinating. There’s this saying I love, it says “A man who procrastinates in his choosing will inevitably have his choice made for him.” It’s never easy listening to your first thoughts, but it pays off sometimes for sure.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One of my favorite things to do in the city is basically anything where I can eat and be happy. Honestly, I would literally eat all day if I could. I love me some food. Lumen Grill, Lafayette Coney, Las Cazuelas, Hop Cat, Union Assembly, the list goes on but these are some really dope places I go from time to time in the city. Places I want to go but haven’t had the chance, Pizza Kat, Deluxx Fluxx, and Monroe Street Midway.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am blessed to have gotten this opportunity once again to share my story and who I am with the world. I owe it to so many beautiful people where I am with my art and how far I’ve come with it. I want to say thank you to Mikaili Aiyan for allowing me to compete for a beat she produced, that turned into one of my biggest songs “Slice of Life 2.0”. She is a super-talented producer and engineer working with some crazy talented and notable artists. I’m just in awe at how far she’s gone with her craft so far. I also want to shout out Planit Earf aka Daniel Dugger for creating amazing beats that I can write almost instantaneously to. He is such an amazing Producer. I want to shout out H2O and Ronni Ngata as well. They are poised artists with a ridiculous amount of talent. Ronni Ngata gave me a chance to perform for the first time and I’ll never forget that moment. I am still really appreciative of that. This whole thing is about to be its own page, I have so many important people to shout out. Honestly, you guys know who you are.
