We had the good fortune of connecting with Dane Porter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dane, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As attention grew for the artwork, I knew I needed to create a business from my work. I would have never guessed that demand would grow as great as it is today. There has been a great amount of learning and figuring out along the way. However, I always looked at the business as a way to bring color to communities while creating a full-time income.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The journey of an artist is never easy. It is a challenging job, and also a very rewarding one. Finding inspiration sometimes isn’t always easy. My artwork is inspired by many different things that have caught my attention throughout my life. Sometimes capturing that inspiration can take time. A love for nature and architecture are two things that have heavily inspired my work. Elements of this can be found throughout the color and shapes formed. Also, I would say my love for simplicity and minimalism can be found throughout my art. A lot of my work is very simple in form probably because I love that feeling of “just enough to be beautiful”.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That is an easy one! Here in Michigan, there are many beautiful places throughout the state. However, the one place I would recommend above all else is Northern Michigan. This is a place covered in incredible scenery and plenty of artistic inspiration. The Leelanau area in Northern Michigan would be the first place I would recommend someone to visit.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When entering the commercial art profession, I had to learn a lot along the way solely on my own. I never had anyone familiar with the art profession around me. However, I was always surrounded by family and friends who encouraged any creative and business endeavor I had. My work ethic was something that I definitely inherited, and can attribute to my parents. I always understood the value of hard work and entrepreneurship from them. They taught me the value of having a solid work ethic in everything I do. This has helped in giving me an entrepreneurial outlook on my craft.
