We had the good fortune of connecting with Dave Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dave, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Having started with an interest in photography as long ago as the early 70’s, I’ve dreamed for many years of starting a photography business. I specifically chose commercial photography to start my business.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I began my photography journey in the early 1970s when, on a whim, I purchased a Fujica 35mm film camera. At the time, I had no intention of turning it into a career—I was simply fascinated by the medium and began teaching myself the fundamentals of photography.

My professional path initially took a different direction. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Oakland University. I spent the majority of my career working in these technical fields, while continuing to pursue photography as a passionate hobby.

As I approached retirement, I founded 4 Scotts Photography. Over the past five years, I have dedicated myself full-time to building this business, and I’m proud of the success we’ve achieved. We have since expanded our services to include videography, further broadening the value we offer our clients.

I believe my technical background, combined with a lifelong commitment to developing my creative skills, gives me a unique advantage. Modern photography and videography are deeply rooted in technology, and this blend of expertise allows me to deliver high-quality, innovative solutions.

One of the most challenging transitions was learning how to build business relationships through networking—something not emphasized in my previous career. There was certainly a learning curve, but through my involvement with organizations like BNI and the local Chamber of Commerce, I’ve developed a strong network of professional connections.

Today, I provide photography and videography services tailored to the Commercial and Residential Real Estate industries, business headshots, food and product photography, and video production. As a small business with low overhead, I’m able to work closely with clients to craft personalized, cost-effective solutions. I value the relationships I build with each client and am committed to supporting their business goals in every way I can.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Certainly, my wife has been my biggest supporter. I have also received a lot of support, mentoring and training from other photographers I’ve connected with through the Detroit Professional Photographers Association (DPPA). I have also received considerable support from my business networking groups at BNI and the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce.
