We had the good fortune of connecting with Devin Kelch and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Devin, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
Being in the music industry, the feeling of giving up always hangs around.
Most days you feel like you’re running in place and not going anywhere.
You are always thinking “does anyone even care about what I’m doing?”

But then I always get reminded about the feeling a good song gives me.

That’s what it’s all about, creating something from a feeling you have and connecting with other people, that is what keeps me going.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My band is my life, my life is my band. I take a lot of pride in how far I’ve come as a band leader and musician. It’s all about my perseverance. I had to fight to get to where I am today. When I started I had countless people tell me that I wasn’t good enough. I would just listen and say “ok, watch this”. Every time someone came at me like that, it pushed me to do better or try harder.

You just have to believe in yourself and your art. Nothing else matters. Everything will work itself out, you just have to stay persistent and never give up.

I am most excited about creating new material. I get excited when I write a new song, I just want to share it with the world. Much like right now, I’m currently working on a new project for North131 and I can’t wait to share it!!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a buddy in town for a week, I’d definitely take them to all my favorite spots.

We would definitely spend time up in Hardy Dam, MI. Probably do some camping, maybe float down the Muskegon river.

Then, we’d spend sometime on the lakeshore. Probably hit up The Deck in Muskegon to catch a show and eat good right on the beach.

Then we’d have to get downtown Grand Rapids and enjoy the night life, catch some bands and eat some good food!!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would not be where I am right now if it wasn’t for my buddy Schmitty helping me learn and being better as a musician.

Outside of that, the hard work and dedication all came from within.
