Meet Evan Clark | Photographer/Videographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Evan Clark and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Evan, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
One thing that most people not involved in the photography industry do not realize is a challenge is being unique and different from all the other photographers in the area. There are numerous photographers around the West Michigan area who are all outstanding but the biggest challenge I have found has been setting myself apart from the rest. It can become very difficult to be different when practically doing the same thing, even though everyone in the industry is doing the same overall thing, taking photos, it is important to be able to be different and unique in different ways. A way I try to set myself apart is being so young and this industry on its own sort of sets me apart from others, but a way I try and be different is by not focusing on what others are doing and staying with my own ideas and paths. I try to get out of my comfort zone and always try new things on every single shoot I do. I will try and always find time to do some pre-production planning and find some new things for me to try and do. I try and make every single shoot I learning experience where I always am learning something new, good or bad.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Something that sets me apart from others when it comes to the business aspect of my business is the fact that I started this business when I was at the age of 15. That on its own is quite an accomplishment in my book. Now I’ve been running and operating this business for going on 3 years now. So something that sets me apart from others is my age. Overall I would say there were ups and there were downs, but it wasn’t necessarily easy there were challenges but with a little work and by learning a little with trial and error I was able to work through the early hardships and challenges but my Dad helped me a lot with it all. He was always there and was always there to help me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I wanted to show my buddy the best time ever, I would first start off with dinner at a local taco place in the Grand Rapids area called, Condado Tacos, a recent taco place I was shown that is killer. Super good food and usually pretty quick, the vibes are just on a whole other level and the overall experience is just so good every time. Then, I would head over to the Grand Rapids Downtown Market or Kilwins Ice Cream and get a sweet great of ice cream, then go to Grattan Raceway, the race track over in Belding, Michigan, and fool around there for a bit, then at the end of the day I would go to Grand Haven and to the lakeside to watch the sunset!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Someone who deserves part of the credit to being where I am right now would be my family and close friends, but more specifically my Dad. My Dad helped me get going and helped teach me some of the business aspects of being freelance. I can’t say I’d be in the same place I am right now without him. My family as a whole has helped me with support and drive to keep going. One other person who has helped keep the drive alive and who has supported me every step of the way has been my girlfriend, Stella continuously supports me and helps me see the good even when things don’t always go the way I would have chosen them to go. She helps me more than she knows to help keep the drive alive even when the going gets tough. But overall, my family and close friends are my biggest supporters, and overall all deserve a shoutout.
