We had the good fortune of connecting with Ideeyah Supreme and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ideeyah, why did you pursue a creative career?
Performing arts has always been a part of my life. Whether it was music, dance, theater— I have always found myself most at home when creating or participating in anything relating to the performing arts.
It’s just something that I knew early on, that this is not only what I wanted to do, but I needed to do. I remember being about 7 or 8 years old and just knowing that this was my path. I auditioned for plays, dance groups, choirs, art centered schools—all of it made sense and just aligned to who I knew I was.
I didn’t understand the ‘why’ in those younger years…all I knew is I enjoyed the work. I enjoyed rehearsals & practice. I enjoyed showing what I had worked on. The ‘why’ part didn’t become clear until well into my adulthood. My ‘why’ is rooted in growth and change. Being an artist [for me] is all about growing and seeing how many forms I can take. It’s about evolving and living a life that inspires creativity. I have no clue what my final form will be but I know that I’m not even close.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think I’m most proud of my resilience. This journey hasn’t always been easy or smooth, and I haven’t exactly expected it to be that. But I’m strong, and each step of the way I’ve proven to myself that this is truly what I’m made for.
I’ve written songs & collaborated with many artists that I’ve admired for years, like Amp Fiddler, Jessica care Moore, Waajeed, Theo Parrish and more. I wouldn’t have gotten to this place if it weren’t for those that saw things in me that I didn’t always see in myself. I’m thankful for them.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have my sisters. They all know who they are, and how much they pour into me when I need it most. Mai, Dae, Connie, Lex, Kina, Tiff, Sonyah— they all remind me of love.
