We had the good fortune of connecting with Jen McPherson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jen, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I have always been a creative person. Growing up I was involved in theater and dance and I have always loved to write. When I left my teaching job, I knew I wanted to be my own boss and create something of my own. It was important to me to use my love of the arts and small business to create a space for makers that allowed them to showcase their creative talents as well.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What I would love for the world to know about us here at McPherson Local is that we are here for the makers. We strive every day to be champions for the artists and the makers and farmers, for the dreamers and creators and for the small businesses out there. Our shop is a place for highlighting and encouraging those dreamers and makers and we take that responsibility seriously. When you shop with us, we can tell you the story of the product as well as the story of the person behind it so when you leave with your item, you feel empowered by your decision to shop small and you also feel a sense of pride in your community. McPherson Local is a safe, supportive, and welcoming place for all and we try our very best (and then some) to make your time with us time well spent.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Saline is small but there are wonderful things waiting for you here! When you’re downtown, I would encourage you to check out Fine Print Bookstore and support a local, independent book seller! They have a wonderful selection of books, games, and puzzles. Then, pop over to The Gallery at Whitepine Studios and take in all of the fine art they have on display and for sale. You could also sign up for an art class next door at Whitepine Studio! If it’s a Saturday morning, you’ll defintely want to get over to the Saline Farmers Market and see all of the great offerings from our local farms and artisans. If your stomach starts rumbling – no worries! Benny’s Bakery is known for their Saturday homemade, warm soft pretzels. I can eat a half dozen, no problem – they are that good. If pretzels aren’t your thing, no sweat! Their doughnuts can’t be beat. You can finish your afternoon by stopping into Cobblestone Rose, Eleanor’s Sweets and Sodas, and Carrigan Cafe and strolling a few blocks down to The Resale Boutique, Or, maybe you’d like to try a class at Yogacentric or make an appointment at Mod Squad Salon. Once dinner rolls around, we have some great restaurants to choose from – Salt Springs Brewery, Mac’s Acadian Seafood, Brecon Grille, and Dan’s Tavern. And this is just in the downtown area! Saline extends farther out with many more places to visit!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This shop is not a one woman show. I may be the owner but this store is a family. So, this shout out goes to Ellery Hatopp, manager/artistic director/merchandiser/pep talker/artist/metalsmith/builder/and all around extraordinary human. I also have to give a shout out to Team McPherson Local – Jess, Katherine, Evie, Ellie, Wyatt, Sierra and Raina.
