Meet Jessica Krutell | Lead Paranormal Investigator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Krutell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, how does your business help the community?
Mystic Mitten Paranormal Group is dedicated to providing a welcoming, judgment-free space for individuals to share their personal paranormal experiences. Our mission is captured in our slogan, “Make the Paranormal Normal,” which reflects our belief that stories of unexplained encounters deserve to be heard, respected, and more widely accepted within society. We strive to normalize the conversation around the paranormal by creating a supportive community. Everyone should feel comfortable discussing their experiences without fear of ridicule.

Mystic Mitten also proudly champions the presence of women in the paranormal field. If you’ve watched any popular paranormal television shows, you’ll notice the field is often portrayed as male-dominated. However, in our experience, being a female investigator offers unique advantages. Women often come across as more approachable, which can help create a more compassionate and empathetic environment during investigations. This is additionally helpful in sensitive cases involving children.

Through our work, we aim not only to bring greater acceptance to the paranormal but also to empower more women to step into the field with confidence.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I come from a lengthy background in the haunted house and entertainment industry, which has uniquely shaped my approach to paranormal investigations. While I now explore genuine hauntings with Mystic Mitten Paranormal Group, my experience as a scare-actor and haunted house manager has given me a valuable perspective, especially when it comes to debunking. I’ve learned that many occurrences, though seemingly paranormal, often have perfectly reasonable explanations that can easily be misunderstood.

No space is too dark, too small, or too scary for me. I approach every case—whether dealing with the living or the departed—with a friendly, respectful, and professional demeanor. I firmly believe in the saying, “You catch more flies with honey.” In fact, I’ve found that paranormal activity often increases when we’re kind, and simply enjoying ourselves.

Like many in this field, we’ve faced our fair share of challenges. One recurring issue is being asked to contribute to projects or collaborations without compensation. While Mystic Mitten proudly offers complimentary investigative services to Michigan residents, it’s equally important to recognize your own value and respect your time and expertise. Setting healthy boundaries is essential, not just for the integrity of our work, but for the sustainability of our mission.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you’re planning a visit to my hometown of St. Clair Shores, Michigan, I highly recommend coming in the fall—it’s the perfect season to experience everything spooktacular the city has to offer!

In addition to my work with Mystic Mitten Paranormal Group, I’m proud to be the creator of the St. Clair Shores Halloween Tour, a city-wide community event inspired by my love for Halloween. This annual tradition began as a way for me to give back to my community and has grown into a highly anticipated celebration of creativity. Each year, over 45 homes apply for the chance to be featured on the tour, which showcases some of the most elaborate and imaginative home-haunt Halloween lawn displays throughout the city. Many homes incorporate music, fog machines, lighting effects, and even live actors to enhance the experience. We’ve had guests travel from as far as Frankenmuth, Michigan just to attend.

While you’re in town, be sure to stop by The Ardmore. This local gem is not only known for its top-tier service and delicious food (seriously—to die for), but it’s also one of our favorite haunted hot spots with its own set of ghostly tales. The restaurant is located within one of the oldest buildings in the city!

For vintage lovers, be sure to visit Time Warp Vintage. Also located in St. Clair Shores, this resale shop is packed with a vast variety of unique and spunky treasures for your shopping pleasure.

Just outside of St. Clair Shores, you’ll find the Anatomy of Death Museum, home to one of Michigan’s most extensive collections of macabre artifacts and memento mori. The museum offers a fascinating and in-depth look at death, mourning practices, and the afterlife. The owner is deeply passionate about both preservation and education, and it shows in every detail of the experience.

Whether you’re here for the hauntings, the Halloween magic, or just the history, St. Clair Shores has something unique to offer for everyone!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My interest in the paranormal was first inspired by my grandmother, whose stories captivated me from a young age. She would often share her own personal experiences, along with first-hand accounts passed down through our family.

I also received major support from my mother. Wednesday evenings became a cherished tradition, as we would sit together, engrossed in our favorite ghost shows. She never once questioned my passion; instead, she encouraged me to pursue my dreams, no matter how unconventional they may have seemed. She even joined me on numerous investigations, always wanting to be involved. It was abundantly clear she was proud of the path I was following.

Although both my mother and grandmother have since passed on, I continue to feel their presence in my life. I know, in my heart, that their love, support, and guidance remain with me as I carry on this journey they helped ignite.
