We had the good fortune of connecting with Jhayla Mosley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jhayla, what do you attribute your success to?
My mother 100% My mother always made sure that, when I was younger, I was involved in everything you could imagine. I was acting in New York on Off-Off-Broadway at sixteen years old. I was on an AAU swim team. I played Alto and Baritone Saxophone in my high school jazz band. I was a collegiate athlete. My mother pushed me to do all of those things, which helped shape who I am today. I score films because I was in music. I write films because I did theater. I direct films because I was in sports, which taught me discipline and leadership. Her support made me who I am. One day, she said, “You need to pick something and focus on it.” I put all of my energy into track and earned a full-ride scholarship. This taught me that I have no limits, which is exactly how I would describe my success.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a writer and filmmaker who got to where I am today because of my talent, work ethic, and the wonderful people around me who saw the potential in both.

I started my career by working at Amazon while saving up to not only create my first piece of art but also temporarily move to California to build connections and expand my horizons. I’m most excited about offering my audience some different projects. A few of my upcoming works are taking me into some new and exciting places. I’m really starting to grow, get my feet wet, and find my inner voice as an artist. 2025 is the result of the inner work I’ve done for myself, both as a creative and an individual.

In terms of challenges, everything about this industry is challenging! Making a movie is one of the most challenging things I have ever done in my entire life, but the challenges are why I love it so much. Challenges help you grow. There is nothing more challenging than when someone gives you a tight deadline to write a script when you have writer’s block. There is nothing more challenging than losing a location on the day of filming and having to figure it out. The goal is to find likeminded, talented people who are up for the challenge just as much as you are.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d hit the Schwitz for a relaxing day after the flight here. Then, I’d schedule a cooking class with Cooking with Que for a hands-on lunch date. Lastly, I’d hit up Paramita Sound for the vibes.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
David is a director and cinematographer whom I had the pleasure of meeting in 2024. He’s one of those people who, when you’re around him, he makes you strive to do better. I’ve only worked with David once, but he quickly became one of my favorite creative collaborators.
