We had the good fortune of connecting with Johannah Mahnke and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Johannah, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
My work/life balance has changed now because Painted Sugar is not my only business. I’ve added writing and working a 9 to 5 plus going to grad school. Before this, I was only taking care of my household and running Painted Sugar.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve gotten to where I am today through perseverance. I just never gave up when most people would have. It was definitely not easy. There were a lot of times I wanted to quit, but I told myself I wouldn’t. I have my children looking up to me and my younger siblings. I overcame the challenges by going through them. There was no way around them. I sat in the disappointment and I sat in loss and I waited and watched and did my research to do what I needed to in order to make my business better. I’ve learned to know my audience. I’ve learned to do what I need to in order to appeal to them. I’ve learned to follow my own instincts and not just the trends. I want the world to know that Painted Sugar was made from love. I want the world to know that the books I have written were written to assist in self betterment.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Penny Red’s is pretty good, nice vibe in the connected bar. Buddy’s Pizza, I love their Detroit style pizza.
Sid’s Gold room, they have a great bar and karaoke.
Good times on the Ave, nice vibe, great food.

Too many great spots to name.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are many lessons I’ve learned along the way. I’ve met many people and encountered much references. There are too many to name. God is the source of all things good in my life. My family has always been a key element as well. My friends are supportive and there has been many different ears I’ve used as a source of venting.
