We had the good fortune of connecting with John Tripp and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi John, what is the most important factor behind your success?
It was important to me to base my business around symbiotic relationships. I truly believe that so many businesses can be completely complimentary to each other. When a Real Estate agent books me to make a video of the house they’re listing. I know that if I make a great video, it will help them sell the house, they will get paid, and in return they will be incentivized to pay me again. Everybody wins. Anyone that ever books me. I want them to WIN. Because if they win, then I win.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I would never in my life expect to hear this in a sentence, but I honestly love the art of social media business marketing. I think it’s hard to imagine there being artistry in that, especially in comparison to a wedding or travel video. However all videography is story telling, and that itself is the art. How well can you tell this businesses’ story. What images do you need to show? What words need to be said? What’s going to move the targeted audience? All of those pieces make a compelling story, and it takes creativity to conjure those pieces. When I began 6 years ago I would’ve never guessed that short form marketing videos would be the bulk of my business, but it is definitely become my specialty, and I love making them.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This would be my perfect day in the city. Start the day at Anthology Coffee off Division St. I love the vibe there, in addition to some amazing coffee. Then off to DYNO Detroit for some indoor Rock Climbing, my favorite type of workout, and it’s an amazing facility. Grab lunch at Coriander Kitchen & Farm. it’s located off a canal! Which I didn’t even know Detroit had canals till I went there. They have a THE BEST Margaritas, and an AMAZING Falafel Wrap. Then I would end the day at The Kitchen By Cooking With Que. Located in Midtown. Every Friday they host a bring your own wine party, and it feels like a local house party every time. All of my favorite Detroit locals are there.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe my entire career to my very good friend / bandmate, Quiana “Que” Broden. She’s better known as her “Cooking With Que” persona. 7 years ago she started a vegan recipe vlog on youtube, and asked me to help edit the videos. The social media clips became very popular, and she started doing weekly appearances on Fox 2. We were both just trying to figure out how to do it, and support each other. This gave us an amazing platform to showcase our talents and ultimately quit our day jobs.
