We had the good fortune of connecting with Joseph Slicker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joseph, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have to give the credit for that to my Wife, Erin. We have always been the family to throw parties at the house either front yard or backyard. Normally outdoors so naturally, we have a lot of outdoor party games. When COVID hit and people were sent home from work, we got a lot of request from people to borrow our games. She realized that many people did not have these games of their own. Whether it was a matter of storage space to keep them or that they would seldom use them, we noticed that there was a need for small outdoor games to be rented. Thus giving birth to the idea behind Slicker’s Outdoor Game Rentals LLC. It has since expanded into Photobooths as well and I am sure we will continue to grow and add options.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
“How did I get here?” is probably the hardest question to answer on paper but the easiest to articulate verbally. I failed A LOT! I made mistakes that most would never be able to rebound from. Been in lows that most wouldn’t even attempt to climb out of. I am not bragging because I attribute it mostly to my ability to see the positive possibilities in every situation. I have been burned many times by people/partners/charities, you name it. But I learned from each experience. What I have not done, is STOP. I haven’t stopped giving. I haven’t stopped taking risks. I haven’t stopped giving the benefit of a doubt to those seeking direction. I was once told, “You are Good by Nature, do not let Nature take away your GOOD”. Being in car sales with the last name Slicker is definitely not easy but, people don’t forget the name.

As far as what I want people to know about our brand, this is going to sound extremely cheesy but lets be honest, we are very cheesy. My Wife and I love that everything we offer in our small business creates smiles, memories and joy during a time when it is easier to do the opposite. In 20 years from now, you may go through the digital copies of your weddings photobooth and see a little logo for our company in the bottom corner. That means a lot to us.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We are big into stand up comedy so one of the first things we would do is look to see who is playing at Mark Ridley’s in Royal Oak, catch dinner at Da Luigi’s beforehand and end at a local Cigar Bar. But that is just one night.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
So the credit for the love and support that keeps me going is my Wife and Co-Owner of Slicker’s Outdoor Game Rentals LLC., Erin Slicker. Without her, there is no me or this. I am 100% the risk taker and she is 100% the realist between us. It is the perfect Ying and Yang. It is so interesting to me the amount of creativity she has when she lets down her guard to be heard. She handles everything that has to do with the b0oks and I handle the marketing/inventory.

When I joined the Board of Directors for Macomb County Habitat for Humanity, she asked me if I could handle doing that and working and living. I wasn’t sure but that is where she shined. She picked up the slack and made it work because she knew how important it was to me to give back.
