Meet Kate Leighton-Colburn | Executive Director of Out On The Lakeshore

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Leighton-Colburn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kate, how do you think about risk?
I believe that risk-taking is an essential aspect to advancing the impact of an organization. These risks needs to be calculated, of course, but if we live in fear of a possible negative impact we would never make progress. I think this is especially true for organizations working within the advocacy space. History is filled with examples of risk-takers making the world a better place.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started my career in the arts. I was an actor and theatre teacher for multiple years before transitioning into the nonprofit sector. I realized somewhere along the way that I loved working with young people and wanted to make a more widespread impact.
Not to discredit the importance of higher education and academia, but one of the highlights of my professional journey has been on the ground learning. School can serve as an important foundation, but so much of my professional knowledge has been gained through doing. I have been incredibly lucky to work under and alongside some brilliant people who have imparted their expertise to me along the way. It’s important to remember that there is always more to learn.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Holland area has so much to offer! No matter the season, go to the beach (just make sure you bundle up in the winter). The natural landscape is stunning. Make sure to check out the shops and restaurants in downtown Holland on 8th Street, but don’t count out the rest of Holland, too! Check out Washington Square, the Outdoor Discovery Center, and DeGraaf Nature Center.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I need to give a massive shoutout to the folks who worked to ensure the existence of a safe place for LGBTQ+ individuals in Holland and along the West Michigan lakeshore. These folks had a massive mountain to climb, but they made it happen.
