Hi Keirsten, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I have an appreciation for the age-old saying, “no risk, no reward.” Nevertheless, rather than categorize my approach as overly cautious, I tend to describe it as that of a “calculated risk-taker.” This entails a methodical examination of potential gains and losses within the boundaries of my knowledge and experience before I make any decisions.

In my dual roles as the leader of both my household and my business, it becomes paramount for me to adopt a deliberate approach to risk. My risk assessment pivots on two critical aspects: the repercussions on my financial stability and the long-term viability of my business.

When I delve into the topic of financial stability, I engage in a comprehensive scrutiny of how a particular choice might affect my financial well-being. I especially consider whether the worst-case scenario tied to a decision could lead to financial adversity.

This prudent approach serves as a safeguard to maintain a solid foundation for both my personal life and business endeavors. Furthermore, I also contemplate my business’s capacity to navigate new opportunities and potential risks. It is of utmost importance that my business remains not only sustainable but also adaptable in the face of evolving circumstances.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My journey into the world of artistry through cookies has been a remarkable one, and I’m delighted to share my story.

In March of 2009, I faced sudden unemployment when the bank I worked for left Michigan. This unexpected twist of fate led to the birth of “Kookies by Keirsten.” While I wasn’t a professional baker, baking was a cherished tradition passed down through generations in my family, stemming from both my mother and grandmother.

It all started with a humble homemade Elmo cookie for my preschooler’s birthday. Despite my lack of formal experience, I compensated with creativity and a treasured tea cake recipe from my grandmother. Little did I know, this initial endeavor would mark the beginning of something incredible.

The turning point came when a fellow parent noticed my cookie creations and asked for themed cookies for her son’s upcoming party. Although I had my doubts, I embraced the challenge, unknowingly laying the foundation for my business. I began showcasing my early creations on Facebook, and as my skills improved, inquiries started pouring in for various events. This solidified my belief that “there’s always an occasion for a cookie.”

Despite the budding business, there was much to learn. I pursued a Business Administration concentration at Wayne County Community College to gain a better understanding of entrepreneurship. Simultaneously, I returned to the workforce to maintain financial stability, which naturally reduced my baking frequency.

Balancing the demands of work and motherhood was undeniably challenging. However, a pivotal moment at work, coupled with the resonant tagline, “chase what matters,” spurred me to prioritize my passion and responsibilities. With a two-week notice, I made the bold decision to fully commit to my enterprise.

Today, “Kookies by Keirsten,” situated in Detroit, stands as a testament to my remarkable journey. I’ve proudly earned the title of a Kookie Konnoisseur and have been featured on Fox 2 News. Over the years, my clientele has grown, including established firms like Credit Acceptance, the Michigan International Swim Coaches Association, and numerous local celebrities, among others. In the past year alone, I sold over 5,000 cookies, and I continue to harness the vast potential of social media to elevate my brand. My unwavering mission is to consistently amaze every customer with each and every cookie.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family plays a crucial role in my journey! My daughter, Lundyn, serves as my greatest source of motivation. I’ve realized that she learns not only from my direct teachings but also by observing my actions. This understanding inspires me to persevere because I want her to witness the determination and resilience it takes to pursue one’s dreams.

My cousin and trusted assistant, Brandi, has been my right-hand person in this business. She possesses an innate understanding of both me and the intricacies of the business that’s nearly impossible to teach. Brandi consistently encourages me to explore new opportunities and provides unwavering support in all my endeavors. On those tough days when I find it challenging to push forward, she’s there to lift my spirits and remind me of the significant progress I’ve made since the beginning. We all need a cheerleader who comprehends the business and us on a profound level, and I’m eternally grateful for Brandi’s presence in my life. Our diligent efforts will undoubtedly yield fruit.

My uncle has taken on the role of delving into the inner workings of the business, helping me navigate the ever-evolving business landscape. While many have offered opinions, very few have rolled up their sleeves to assist me. They perceive aspects of me that I may not see in myself, and when I’m faced with challenges, I have a devoted support system that keeps me sharp and motivated. With this incredible village in my corner, I’m confident that we’ll overcome any obstacles and achieve success. I am determined to ensure that we all thrive and prosper.
