We had the good fortune of connecting with Ken Rusk and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ken, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
As I mention in Blue-Collar Cash, I talk about filling all of your buckets evenly. You need to evaluate and define what those buckets are. They are split between hobbies, work, transportation, vacation, health, family, and your unique version of Comfort, Peace, and Freedom.

What I mean by Comfort, Peace, and Freedom, is that we all should be chasing our own unique personal Nirvana and what it would look like. As you begin to realize that you are fully in control of your life, and that success follows those clear visions, you learn that you actually can create harmony and balance in your life by paying attention to all of those items in as much equal proportion as possible.

What should our readers know about your business?
I started my company in 1986 with 6 people, and now I have 200+ employees today! One important thing that I learned was that I couldn’t get what I wanted for myself or my company results-wise until everyone working within it got what they wanted first.

Companies are typically linear creatures. At the front side, there is input. In the middle, there is work. On the outside, there is output. And then eventually and hopefully, revenue and profit follow! As owners, we are typically at the end of that line, as we should be.

The practice of creating intrapreneurs within your organization is for me, the secret sauce to creating velocity and growth.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Toledo, Ohio

To eat: Mancy’s Steakhouse, Kengo Sushi, Shorty’s BBQ Grill

To drink: The Inverness Club (patio), The Village Inn, Ventura’s Mexican

To visit: Downtown Toledo to check out a Mudhen’s game (AAA baseball) or to a concert at the Huntington Center

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My father, Stan. He showed me what it was like to be an imperfect perfectionist. He is the source of all of my drive, discipline, and the somewhat challenging trait of trying to make everything great all the time!

My first boss, Nick, who I still work with to this very day. We’ve known each other for 45 years! He showed me what it was like to live life to the fullest!
